March 2005

(Haeundae Beach, Busan; 15 years old)

"Hyeyeon ah," someone hissed behind my ear, "see that girl over there, second from the right?"

It's the weekend, but a special one. This spring, our homeroom teacher and Class 2's homeroom teacher have just gotten engaged, and as a result, the students in both their classes came out to celebrate their union at the Haeundae beach, over a campfire night.

I shook my head at his question, slapping Hyungsik with my hair tied up in a ponytail.

"Ow, my eye!" he shrieked, all the while trying to keep the volume down. He was relentless, "It's the girl I've been telling you about."

My eyebrows came up. Reluctantly, I closed my book, turned to my far right, and my eyes fell on a group of middle school girls from Class 2, sitting a few feet away from the waves. They were engrossed in their chat, occasionally flipping their hair when they laughed.

The second girl from the right, is Hyungsik's crush. Since the beginning of the year, he has been talking about her at every opportunity, so much so that his time spent on gaming seemed to be reducing these days. And that says a lot. Plus, he rarely cared about girls, until now.

It was about seven in the evening, and the setting sun shone on her. I guess she was the tallest among her group of friends, as her long legs were very apparent. Her skin was porcelain, and her features were almost Eurasian. He also didn't lie when he told me she had big eyes.

"Isn't she just an angel?" He spoke as he watched her.

"If she was, then you'll never stand a chance, at least not on earth," sarcasm rolled off my tongue effortlessly.

He laughed dryly and continued, "She's so lovely even when she laughs."

"I thought you'll never mention."

"Plus she's smart. Did you know she's actually ranked top five in our entire grade?"

"You were right, she probably isn't human."

"Yes. Perfection is the way to describe her."

"Now, now, be careful of your drool."

At my words, Hyungsik closed his mouth and his hands went up to his chin. He fell for my prank.

I giggled and challenged him, "You talk about her all-day long. Why don't you just go and say hi?"

Hyungsik changed his sitting position, crossing his legs Indian-style on the sandy beach. His face said it all, there was something on his mind.

I went back to my teen fiction.

For the next few minutes, I could concentrate on the book without any distractions. Just when I was getting to the good part, I saw Hyungsik's hands repeatedly picking up the sand and then putting it down. As the actions gained momentum, he suddenly stood up. He put his left foot forward, leaving my side.

Gulping, my eyes followed him.

That's my boy right there, he can be courageous when he puts his mind onto something. I silently cheered for him.

When Hyungsik finally stood before the girls, they looked up at the unfamiliar stranger. I could only see his back, but it was enough for me to see how nervous he was. He shifted his weight to the right foot, and then the left, and then the right again.
