November 2017
(Ticao Island, The Philippines)
Biting back my nerves, I drew a long and unending breath as my feet lifted off the ground.
The sturdy mammal underneath me hissed a low neigh, while my body fidgeted in a panic, unable to relax. Not knowing how to read the animal, a hundred different thoughts rolled around the walls of my brain as I pictured the horrendous ways in which this could end.
As if reading my thoughts, Hyungsik's low voice echoed through my left ear once he had climbed behind me on the horse. Bringing his warm hands to my awkward ones stuck on my stomach, his whisper came tenderly.
"Relax, Hyeyeon. I'm right behind you."
My breathing slowed down for a while when I felt his hands squeezing my trembling ones. "O... Ok."
Apparently, my "okay" had been overheard by the local man below us. The local guide in his early fifties pulled the rein attached the bridle of the horse firmly but gently towards the shoreline.
I've always imagined myself riding off into the sunset with a loved one, but not with a tense upper body like this.
"If your body keeps being tense like this, I'll start worrying about your neck here, Hyeyeon," Hyungsik teased as he leaned forward, letting his chin fall above the curve of my shoulder.
With every step forward taken by the horse, it felt like we were sinking into the ground. The road below us was soft, and the horse carrying us was pacing at his own rhythm. My lips acted faster than my head as I thought I was losing my balance. "Don't move, Sik! It's... shaking!!"
Hyungsik erupted into a stream of chuckles. "You know, the horse can sense your pulse. What it does depends on how its rider feels. It will be able to know if its rider is calm, panicky, in danger..."
Gulp.
"Very funny, Sik."
Although I laughed dryly, I took his words to heart. Hyungsik had been horse-trained during his Hwarang days. He wouldn't have lied. Dread laid heavily on my mind. I can't believe I actually agreed to his plan of doing this.
"Lean your back against me, Hyeyeon-ah. It'll be fine, I promise."
Not ready to turn my head back, I lean my upper body backwards in tiny inches. But every time the horse rocked forward, my minute efforts proved futile. This was taking eternity. When Hyungsik finally succumbed to laughter, I could do no more than to laugh along helplessly.
With his strong and firm hands gripped my shoulders, my upper body gradually leaned into his broad expanse of chest, separated only by our thin pieces of clothing.
I felt safe in an instant.
Riding into the sunset, Hyungsik's chin fit playfully once again on the crook of my shoulder. With arms wrapped about me, I felt his long lashes flickering on the skin of my cheek. Given how guarded I felt in his arms, there was no doubt about his manliness. Yet, at the same time, he exuded a puppy aura which cried for a woman's tender loving care. Is it weird that I can't decide which of the two I like better?
"I've missed you so much, Hyeyeon. I don't think I would have enjoyed this horse riding if you haven't been here."
A coat of lethargy was painted on the edge of his voice. Without much thought, I lifted his hands to my face, pressing a quick kiss to the back of his palm. "How was your day, Sik?"
