*Brynn's POV*

"My face still hurts," I complained to Tanya as we walked into the gym for the pep rally that was about start. Yesterday Tanya forced me to smile the whole time the homecoming advertisements while her and Kyle shoved flyers and buttons with my face on them at people and handed out some cupcakes that Tanya made. Now today was the pep rally my school always held before the day of the dance. They'd have the band play and have some cheerleaders out there doing stunts and what not, and then at the end they'd let us know who was leading the race of winning homecoming king and queen.

"Oh quit complaining. Your cheek bones look more prominent from it," Tanya said as she pinched my right cheek. I laughed and swatted her hand away.

We entered the gym which was packed with loud and crazy teenagers. I found Kyle pretty fast and made a bee line towards him with Tanya following behind me.

"Hey," Kyle chirped as Tanya and I approached him.

"Hey," Tanya and I said simultaneously.

We sat down next to each other and everyone else in the gym sat down as well. The marching band began to play and the pep rally began.

"Now, I will announce the progress of our homecoming nominees, I'll start with kings first," Mr. Yates said from the center of the gym. Everyone quieted down fast. Mr. Yates started by who was in last place and went up. He also announced the percentage of votes the nominees were winning by. I started twiddling my thumbs and biting my lips as he began announcing the queens.

"Don't worry, I'm sure your in first," Kyle whispered into my ear putting his hand over both of mine. He must've noticed how nervous I was getting because I only twiddle my thumbs when I'm nervous. I looked up at him and gave him a small small and he returned it.

"In second place is Brynn Mathews!"

My mouth dropped, as did Kyle's and Tanya's. What? Did I hear him right? This can't be true. I'm second?

"And in the lead by 1% is Lynn Mathews!"

Kyle, Tanya, and I sat there motionless as everyone else in the gym clapped and cheered. I felt anger boiling inside of me and I didn't want to sit there any longer. I shot up from the bleacher I was sitting one and stomped off out of the gym. I could hear someone following me, but I didn't look back. I just assumed it was Tanya by the clacking of the heels and kept walked.

I hate Lynn. I hate her. I hate her. I hate her.

I slipped into my purple high heeled booties and grabbed my bag off of Tanya's bed. I've been staying the night at Tanya's the past couple nights because I have been wanting nothing to do with Lynn and her friends who have been staying at my house. Today was spirit day and since our school colors were purple and gold, I was wearing some gold glitter shorts, that were pretty short, and a purple tank that showed off a little bit of cleavage but not too much. My long brown hair was straightened and I was wearing a purple headband with gold glitter dots on it that Tanya and I had made last night. Tanya was wearing almost the exact opposite of me. She had gold glitter high heeled booties, purple shorts that were about the same length as mine, a gold glitter tank that didn't show cleavage like my did, and a gold head band with purple glitter dots on it.

"C'mon, don't want to keep your boyfriend waiting," I told Tanya as I grabbed her hand and dragged her away from her vanity mirror. Her boyfriend Danny has been waiting outside for about fifteen minutes just to take her to school. I originally was supposed to ride with them, but Kyle had text me last night saying he wanted to ask me something before school so he was going to pick me up. I was thankful for that because I did not want to be a thrid wheel.
