Chapter Six
"Where do you want to go?" Josh repeatedly asked while glancing at Raven then on the road.
Raven was riding with Josh in his red Ford Mustang. All Raven wanted to do is to go home, get her term paper organized before anymore mishaps from Rebecca come along.
"Josh, I told you. I just, want to go home today," Raven said with a sigh.
"Okay, okay. Just wanting to clarify things," Josh said raising a hand from the stirring wheel, his eyes fixed on the road.
Josh's phone suddenly rang. He took it out from his pocket, glanced at the road and his cell then accepted the call.
"Yow! Talk to me," he said, but all he could her hear was static on the other line.
"Hello?" he said again. "Hello?"
There was more and more static on the other side and a slight murmur.
"Who the hell is this? Do you know who you're goddamn talking to? If this is a prank call, I don't give a sh*t, and you better not mess with Josh Miller," he said irritated.
The static was gone and there was silence on the other side, followed by a slight turbulence, and came a cold laugh. Raven seemed to have heard it and turned to face Josh.
"Die," he heard a female voice whispered.
"Die? What the hell are you –" a shrieking scream came from the other side cutting him off, and making him drop his phone.
"What the hell?" he said angrily and shook his head.
"Who was that Josh?" Raven asked worried.
"Just some weird freaking female who's trying to do a prank call on me," Josh replied with a smirk.
"But, why did you say 'die'?"
"The hell I care! She said that after she laughed. Now, where the heck is my phone?" Josh said reaching down and trying to feel his phone, peering the road from below the stirring wheel.
There were long, loud blows of a horn. Raven turned to where it was, and saw a train coming, fast.
"Josh?" Raven said her eyes glued to the moving train. "Josh?" she said nervously.
"Just a moment, I almost got it," Josh replied still searching for his phone.
"Josh!" Raven bellowed, shaking his shoulder slightly as she glanced at him then at the fast approaching train, its horn sounded again. How could he not hear the train? Raven thought.
"Just a minute babe," Josh said irritated.
"Josh!" she was now practically screaming and was jarring his shoulder.
"What?" he said annoyed straightening up and facing Raven.
"Train!" she exclaimed pointing at the train which had been continuously blowing its horn.
"Holy shit!" he said slamming down the breaks and just in time to stop a few inches away the speeding train.
She exhaled deeply and sank deeper in her chair, while Josh was still trying to find his phone.
"Got it," he said with a relief, looking at his phone and placed it in his pocket. He looked at Raven and sighed.
"I'm really sorry Rav," he said placing his hand over hers.
"It's fine," she replied. "At least we're not dead," she muttered under her breath.
"No, it's not okay. I could have killed us both," Josh said and leaned back in his chair pinching the bridge of his nose, and exhaled deeply.
Raven looked at him and placed her hand over his. "What matters is that we're alive," she said with a slight smile. Josh looked at her and gave a weak smile.
Alive. For now. Raven heard Rebecca's voice and she gulped.
They heard a train's long blow but when they turned to look at the railway, nothing was there.
That's strange. I swear I heard a train coming, Raven thought.
Next thing they heard was the sound of a long horn, shrieking sound of breaks and the crushing sound of metal against the railway.
Raven shifted her direction to the sound and saw a blue SUV, wrecked on the railway, the same wreckage that happened to Rebecca. She gasped, tears swelling in her eyes. She bit her lower lip as it quivered and tried her best not to cry.
"Hello? 911?" she heard Josh suddenly say.
"There's a wrecked car on the railway... No ... Yes... Okay..." Josh said and ended the call.
Josh went out and opened Raven's door with a worried expression.
"Everything's going to be fine, okay Raven?" Josh said as he hugged Raven.
She didn't held back the tears anymore as she cried on his shoulder. He slightly pulled away, placing his hands on her shoulders and looked at her.
"Now, you stay in the car. I'll go check if your mom is okay?" Josh suggested.
"I'm coming with you," Raven said.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes," she replied with a nod and both of them half-ran towards the wrecked, turned over car.
Josh headed first and knelt down near the driver's seat. He placed his hand over Jena's mouth and felt cold air coming out from it.
He looked at Raven and gave a slight grin. "She's alive," he said.
Raven gave out a relief sigh as she placed a hand over her chest. Josh heard Jena made a slight groan at the same time they heard the ambulance and the fire truck's siren.
Raven was in the hospital, sitting quietly outside Jena's room, her head lying on Josh's shoulder. Once the paramedics arrived, Raven called his father.
The door on Jena's room opened, and both her dad and the doctor walked out. Raven stood up and Josh followed. Robert closed the door gently behind him and gave out a sigh.
"Her condition is now stable. Her brain has some minor damages, a few clots, but don't worry, her memory is still intact. She's going to be alright," the doctor said.
"Thank you doctor," Robert said.
"Call the nurse if you have some problems or if you need anything," the doctor reminded and left.
"You can go home now Josh. Thanks for accompanying Raven here and calling 911," Robert said with a slight nod.
"It was no problem sir," Josh said and turned to Raven. "I'll be going now. Call me if you need anything," he added.
Raven nodded. "I will," she said with a smile and gave Josh a quick kiss on the cheek. He smiled and walked away.
Raven looked at Robert. "Is mom going to be okay dad?" she asked placing her hand inside her jean pockets.
"She's going to be fine Raven," Robert said and wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
"I hope so," Raven said to herself and they went inside Jena's room, closing the door behind them gently.
