"Spencer, you're gonna do great. Don't overthink it." Melanie said.

The journalist was talking to the agent who was nervous about starting his first day of teaching at the academy. Melanie was taken by surprise when he had called her. She didn't think she would be hearing from him after having a brief conversation with him from the other day.

But she wasn't complaining, and neither was Spencer. Sure Spencer may have been a little bit hesitant to call Melanie and have her calm him down but he knew she could do that without even trying.

Spencer sighed softly. "You're right, it's not that big of a deal. Just gonna be talking in front of a hundred or so people."

Melanie laughed softly. It was no surprise to the journalist that Spencer was feeling like a hot mess. He wasn't the very best at talking to people, especially not in front of a large crowd by himself. She wished she could be there for him but the thought of that made her stomach tie up in a knot. The last thing she needed was to think of her ex in a caring manner.

"Mellie! It's about to start!" Joy yelled from the living room.

"Oh shit. Sorry, Spencer I gotta go. Rossi is about to be on television." Melanie said.

"Oh yeah, Penelope's recording his interview for me so I can watch it when I'm finished teaching." Spencer replied. "I'll talk to you later, yeah?"

"Always a phone call away, agent. Break a leg tonight."

The two said their goodbyes before Melanie walked to the living room and sat next to Joy on the couch. It felt refreshing talking to Spencer after a couple years of radio silence. She always did say that they started off as friends and his friendship always meant the most to her.

"How is Agent Reid doing?" Joy asked, grinning.

"He's doing good. He has his first teaching gig tonight and he's nervous about it." She replied, sitting down next to her friend. She looked looked over at Joy and rolled her eyes at the grin on her voice. "Wipe the smirk off your face! We're working on being friends again. Now let's stop focusing on me and on your father being on television talking about his new book."

Joy shook her head, laughing softly. "Right of course."

The two girls looked over at the TV as soon as the intro to the news station's theme music began to play. It was exciting to both girls to know that they knew someone as successful as David Rossi. He was a smart man and the books he had written have been insightful. It was one of the reasons Melanie had gotten into investigative journalism and wanted to pursue it as a career. She loved learning about serial killers and being involved in cases.

Soon enough, Rossi's happy moment turned around. By the look of the news anchor's face, something wasn't right. Just as Rossi was explaining the book, the news anchor had cut him off.

"Sorry to interrupt, but we have breaking news. Earlier tonight was a third in what Miami police are calling a string of robbery-murders. It started last week near Coral Gables university. But I should warn you is, what you're about to see could be considered graphic." He began to explain.

Joy and Melanie sat up straight and moved to the edge of their seats. On screen they showed a woman shot dead in her car; soft gasps escaped the girls' lips. Of course a shooting like this was a very common thing but it wasn't often that they showed something like this on national tv unless it was serious - like for example, a string of serial murders.

"Robbery-murder though? Seems very common." Melanie stated.

"True, but a third one in a week? One is whatever, two is a coincidence, three is a serial killer." Joy said.

"Who told you that? Rossi?" Melanie joked, chuckling softly. The girl reached over to grab the remote and turned off the tv.

"Maybe." Joy laughed.  "I suppose I should be heading out. It's almost bedtime for Kai and he typically can't sleep if I'm not home. I'll text you when I get home."

The two girls stood up from the couch and gave each other a hug before Melanie escorted Joy out of her place. After Joy had left, Melanie sat back on the couch and continued to watch the news coverage of what happened down in Miami. There wasn't much that sparked her interest. But she did hope that the BAU did catch the unsub that was causing harm to innocent people. She turned off the TV and decided to do some work from her laptop. Just as she was working, her phone rang.

She glanced down at her phone and raised an eyebrow when she didn't recognize the number. But then again, it was common for her to get calls from people she didn't know. Without much hesitation she answered the call.

"Mellie Alvez."

"Mellie, hey. It's Agent Simmons."

For some reason, this made her heart drop. And definitely not in the 'Oh man a cute boy is calling me' kind of way.

"Agent Simmons, hi. Is my brother okay?"

The male chuckled softly. "Yeah, yeah. He's perfect. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I uh. I actually got your number from Penelope. I hope that isn't too weird. I also didn't mean to scare you with that introduction."

Melanie let out a sigh before letting out a laugh. She placed her laptop beside her and leaned back on the couch with her legs pulled up against her chest.

"You really did almost give me a heart attack, agent. What can I do for you?" She asked.

"I just wanted to see how you were doing." He replied. "And maybe get to know you some. Didn't quite get a chance to do that when I was in San Francisco."

Melanie bit down softly on her bottom lip to refrain from smiling but of course she couldn't help but to. She hadn't expected the conversation to last long but somehow they managed to talk for god knows how long. It all started out with simple small talk and ice breakers until they got down to the nitty gritty.  When it felt like it was getting later than she thought it was, the girl glanced at her phone.

"Matt, we literally have been talking for five hours. I mean, I don't care that I've been up this long but you have a case and an unsub to catch. You need all the rest you can get." Melanie told him.

Matt laughed a bit. "Shit. You're right. I've really enjoyed talking to you though, Mells. You think I can call you sometime again? Or maybe text you?"

"I would enjoy that. I'll talk to you soon, agent."

"Talk to you soon, Mells."

It was weird for Melanie to call Matt "agent." Obviously it was a general term to call the people who worked at the FBI but she only truly called one person "agent" and was mostly used as a nickname rather than a proper term. But of course she didn't want to think about that. She had moved on from her last relationship and it was time for her to explore the realms of dating. Not that she wanted to date another person of her brother's team because that's one of the last things she wanted to do. Though anything was possible.
