She sighed, slamming her locker shut and turning to her friend, "Since when did high school suck this much?" She groaned as Lian shrugged, "Was it ever really good?" She replied as Mar'i smirked and threw her bag over her shoulder, "I guess not."
They proceeded to walk down the hallway to the front entrance when Mar'i found herself walking straight into someone. She looked up to see Damian and stepped back, "Sorry." She smiled as he glared at her, "Watch it." He grumbled as she rolled her eyes, "No one's even here." She leant up and quickly kissed his cheek as he hurriedly flicked his eyes around, only to see that she was right. "Okay fine." He smiled and pressed a brief kiss to her lips before stepping away, "I'll see you later." He squeezed her hand before walking away and she smiled, turning her attention back to her friend who gave her an amused look, "Why do you guys keep your relationship so secretive? I mean, you're clearly super into him." Lian said with a raised eyebrow as Mar'i exasperatedly blew a stray lock of hair out of her face, "You know what my Dad's like." She sighed as they arrived at the bus stop.
"I dunno, he's pretty cool." Lian argued as Mar'i shook her head, "Not when it comes to Damian. Or me dating people. Mix those together and it's basically hell." She explained as the other girl laughed, "He's not a fan of you dating, so what?" She asked. "It's more the Damian thing than the dating. We grew up together, I think it just weirds him out." Mar'i ran a hand through her long hair as the bus pulled up and they hopped on and took a seat towards the back. "What about Damian's parents? Is Bruce okay with it?" Lian queried as Mar'i shrugged, "I don't know. I guess he would be if we told him."
"So tell him." Lian insisted as Mar'i sighed and changed the subject, "This is my stop, I'll see you tomorrow." She waved goodbye before stepping out of the bus and walking the rest of the way home.
The next day was no different to the last: get up early, nearly miss the bus, sit through five classes that all seemed to blur together, and end the same way, slamming her locker shut and walking with Lian back to the bus.
"Did you see Damian today?" Lian asked with a mischievous sparkle in her eye. "You know he's in my math class. Our math class." Mar'i muttered as she laughed, "Fine. Sue me for having an interest in your love life." She rolled her eyes. "Take an interest in your own love life." Mar'i sighed as Lian groaned, "You know Colin's in Jump City." She countered, sinking low in her seat, "What I wanna know about is you and your super sexy, brooding, secret boyfriend!" She whined as Mar'i glared at her, "Sh!" She snapped.
"Come on Mar! Give me details. Like, do you love him? Does he love you? How long has this been going on? Have you had-"
"Shut up Li." Mar'i muttered as her friend sighed, "Just curious, but if you really don't wanna talk about it..." She trailed off, not needing to elaborate. "Thank you." Mar'i annunciated with a sigh. They continued to casually chat until the bus arrived at Mar'i's stop and she hopped off, waving to Lian on the way out. She walked for a few minutes before someone put their hands over her eyes. She immediately felt a grin make its way onto her face as the person leant forwards and kissed her cheek, "Hey." They whispered. She spun around and giggled, "Hey Dami, what are you doing here?" She asked, planting a short kiss on his lips. "I wanted to see you." He answered, making her blush. "You're sweet." She giggled, playing with the knot of his school tie that he had clearly loosened, despite the school's strict rule against it. "I really am." He smirked as she rolled her eyes and lightly punched him in the arm, "Seriously, what'd you come to tell me?" She asked. They almost never met out in public due to the risk of paparazzi, after all, the two of them combined attracted quite a lot of attention from the media, not that they really minded.
He took a deep breath and extended his hand for her to take, which she happily did, and lead her to the rooftop of a nearby city building. "I need to tell you something and I do not wish to be disturbed or interrupted." He explained as they sat on the edge of the building, much like they did on most nights while on patrol. "So what do you wanna say?" She asked as he turned to face her, not bothering with preamble or mindless rambling and just saying, "I love you. I just wanted you to know."
She smiled and drew him in for a kiss, "Damian," She whispered as he raised an eyebrow and said nothing. "I love you too." She grinned as he happily laughed and kissed her.
Sharing kisses and muffled 'I love you's' on that rooftop, high school had never seemed so sweet.
