Valentines

Mar'i sat at home alone, sighing. It was their first Valentine's Day together, and he wasn't there. Of course it was a stupid holiday for idiots, but, well, sometimes being an idiot was fun.

Her phone buzzed and she checked it to see another text from Damian; 'Hey baby, still caught up at work. I'll be there as soon as possible. I love you.'

She rolled her eyes, not bothering with a response. This wasn't the first time this had happened, she had been stood up for dates and dinners, even her birthday. Maybe he just wasn't as serious about their relationship as she was. Maybe she should end it. As much as she didn't want to, it seemed like both the reasonable and logical thing to do. "Come on Damian." She whispered to herself, maybe if he could save tonight, she would stay. They could be happy. But by the looks of it, he wouldn't even make it there before midnight. She sighed and got up, leaving his apartment. That was it, she couldn't take it anymore.

Walking outside, she was immediately yanked into an alleyway. "Hey!" She yelped in surprise as a grimy, pale haired man held a knife to her throat, "What's a pretty girl like you doing out here all alone?" He asked in a sinister voice as she rolled her eyes and flat hand punched him in the face, causing him to stumble back and drop the knife, which she picked up and began skilfully twirling; an intimidation technique that Damian had taught her. "I'm going home so I don't have to see my jerk of a boyfriend." She hissed, punching him in the chest so hard he flew backwards and hit the opposite wall of the alley. "Who, by the way, probably wouldn't even notice that I'm gone." Frustration seeped into her voice as she slapped handcuffs onto his wrists and took out her phone, calling the cops and telling them where to pick him up.

She wasn't into the mood to go all the way down to the station. She stayed until she heard nearby sirens and took off, making the short walk back to her own apartment and falling onto the couch. It reminded her of when Damian would get home from patrol and come here to see her, using vague bruises and faded scars as an excuse for her assistance. She would simply roll her eyes and pull him close for a kiss, falling back onto the couch with him.

It seemed like such a long time ago, like a distant memory, so distant that you couldn't be certain if it was real or something that your mind had conjured up.

She was snapped out of her daze by the sound of her phone ringing, louder than she expected. Without looking, she answered it, surprised when she heard Damian's voice. "Mar'i, where are you?" He asked as she drew in a sharp breath, she really didn't think she would feel this guilty. "I can't talk right now. I'll see you tomorrow." She mumbled before hanging up, leaving him immensely confused.

Curling her knees to her chest, she waited for morning to come, but before that happened, her door flung open and Damian marched in, "Mar'i!" He rushed to her and tightly hugged her, "I heard what happened. Are you okay?" He asked as her heart melted and butterflies fluttered in her stomach like they always did when he touched her. "I'm sorry." She said in a small voice, pushing him away. Confusion passed over him and he angled his head, "What for?"

She took a deep breath, "I don't think I can see you anymore." She whispered as his eyes widened in panic, "I don't understand." He took a series of steps back until he hit the wall. "Damian, do you know how many times you've stood me up?" She was beginning to get angry, "Dates, my birthday, your birthday, tonight!" She exclaimed, "I'm not going to continue to be... to be humiliated by you!" She yelled as he crossed his arms, "You know that was never my intention, you know how much I love you." He mumbled, looking down at the ground. "I don't think I do. You say that you love me but you never show it." She glared.

"I'm sorry. I'll try to be better." He whispered as she wiped away tears that she hadn't noticed spill from her eyes, "Will you though?" She asked as he drew something from his pocket, "If that's what you want, I suppose I have no use for this anymore." He whispered, tossing her the box. She caught it and gingerly looked at it as he opened the door, "The rest of your possessions should arrive within one to two days." He muttered before quietly closing the door.

She shakily opened the box and immediately, streams of tears poured down her cheeks. Inside was a gleaming engagement ring, staring up at her. Immediately, she ran out of her apartment and found Damian at the end of the hall, "Damian." She sobbed as he turned around and stonily looked at her, waiting for her to express her intent.

"I love you so much." She hiccuped as his gaze softened. He stood absolutely still until she grabbed him by the front of his shirt and tugged him against her. He ran his hands up her back and leant forwards, "I'm sorry." He murmured, kissing her temple. She stood up on her tiptoes and kissed him, "No, I'm sorry, I'm so stupid." She mumbled as he shook his head and pulled her against him, parting her lips with his own in a flurry of desperate and almost violent kisses.

Stumbling to get back to Mar'i's apartment. They fumbled through the door, kicking it shut behind them, fighting for control, passion blazing in their eyes. She moaned against his lips, causing him to kiss her harder and hold her more firmly against him. She slipped her hands under his shirt and pulled it over his head as he pressed forwards until she hit the back wall. "Can we just pretend this never happened?" He breathily asked as she nodded, "What never happened?" She mumbled as he furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, "Us breaking-"
"It's an expression you idiot. Now hurry up and kiss me." She exasperatedly muttered as he smirked and did just that.
