He was in love. She was in love. The problem was, it wasn't with each other.
It also wasn't great that he happened to be in love with one of her best friends.
Silent pining had become part of her daily routine.
"Nightstar!" He shouted, snapping her out of her fantasies. "What the fuck are you doing?!" He screamed, making her wince slightly, "Sorry. I wasn't thinking!" She exclaimed, snapping out of her daze and focusing on the scene in front of her.
Even though it was just a simulation, Damian took it as serious as an actual life or death situation.
She charged up a starbolt and fired at a few of the faceless masses of people rushing towards them. It was always these scenarios that she hated. The ones where the enemies weren't very hard to beat, but there were so many of them it was overpowering.
"Focus Grayson." She whispered to herself, forcing her eyes on anything but him, returning her attention to the mudroom.
Not too long passed before her focus wavered again, resulting in her being stabbed from behind. She woke up shaking and pushed her hand through her hair, hopefully it didn't look like she was distracted when she was 'killed'.
Unfortunately, Damian never missed much, so she hid in the corner of the room.
"Grayson!" He leapt up and immediately found her, his eyes burning with anger. "Don't even start, Damian! I'm having a bad day!" She found the first pathetic excuse she could and fixed it with a glare. "I don't care if you're having a bad day! You just proved that you are totally incapable of listening to simple instructions and following them, putting yourself, me, and the rest of the team in insurmountable danger!" His face reddened as he yelled at her, clearly furious.
Mar'i could feel tears begin to burn behind her eyes so she tilted her head back, running a hand through her hair and sighing, "Stop it! Just-" she felt her lower lip tremble and bit down on it hard, furiously yanking on her jacket.
"Where are you going?! Training is not over yet!" He shouted as she rolled her eyes, "Fuck you!" She managed to keep her voice steady just long enough to leave.
Damian simply scoffed and leant against the wall, watching the rest of the team wake up.
Almost instantly, Irey noticed the absence of her friend and approached her boyfriend. "Where's Mar'i?" She cautiously asked as he scoffed again and rolled his eyes, not answering her question.
"Damian-" She dragged a hand down her face, "You have to stop. It's always her that you manage to blame." She glared before rushing after Mar'i.
"Mar'i, wait." She said, but hate simply ignored her and continued walking. "You know he doesn't mean anything he says. He's really quite sweet if you get to know him-"
"Shut up, Irey. You're the last person I want to talk to right now." Mar'i muttered, pushing away tears that she hoped the other girl hadn't seen. "Mar'i, running away won't help anything." Irey tried, which resulted in a cruel sarcastic laugh, "How ironic."
"Don't leave, Mar'i. Let's talk." Irey tried, which just made Mar'i angrier, "Fuck off!" She screamed, lighting starbolts and flying into the air so she could better tower over her friend, making her eyes glow.
She speedily flew out of the building and sat in one of the taller trees, shrouded by the leafy branches and freely sobbing.
Some stories just didn't have their happy endings. And this was one of them.
