We trudged on until we decided to camp for the night. That was painful. Kyle was complaining, Lexi was trying to pick a fight, and Simon was yelling at both of them.
"Enough! If we are going to do this we have to work together!" I finally snapped. They all stopped and looked at me. I glared at them and dropped my sleeping bag to the ground. "Just shut up so I can sleep." I grumbled. With that, I crawled into the comforting warmth of the bag and turned away from them. It was minutes later that Simon tried to get my attention.
"Kk? Come on Katie, I know you're awake." He pestered. His hand was poking my forehead. I swatted it away.
"Go away, Simon," I answered shortly. He continued to play with my pixie cut hair.
"Kk. Kk." He sang.
"What?" I demanded rolling over. Simon was smiling at me. He leaned down and kissed my forehead softly.
"I'm sorry, Kk." I sighed but still kissed his cheek.
"Yeah, yeah. Can I sleep now?" I asked. Simon nodded and I rolled back over. I tucked my head under the blanket to hide the small blush growing on my face. Simon and I had been doing that for years when we were mad at each other. So why did this time feel different? I shook my head. Stupid Katie. You are thirteen. There is no romance.
I ran as fast as I could, but it wasn't fast enough a clear indicator of a dream. Though I realized this, I couldn't wake myself up to stop the inevitable ending. I still ran through the familiar trees near Magnolia. I skid to a stop in front of a large boulder. Touching it with my hand, the guild mark flashed briefly and it opened. I stepped into the entrance and descended down into darkness. I eventually found myself entering a large cavern filled with different colored crystals. Papa was the only one there.
"Katie. What do you think you're doing?" Papa scowled.
"Trying to find you. You've been gone for seven years, Papa." I told him.
He shook his head at me. "You're too young. You're going to yourself and your brother hurt."
"No, Papa! We can do this! Just tell me where to find you." I begged.
His eyes filled with love and sadness. "I can't Kk. You wouldn't know where it is anyway."
"Then let me tell Mama. She can find you."
"No, Katie. She would only hurt herself trying. I got where I am by a freak accident and there is no way back."
I felt the precious time I had with my Papa ending and I was waking up. I reached out, knowing it was futile. Papa reached back and just before we could touch, he was gone and I was waking up.
"Katie! Get your lazy butt up and use some of that ice magic you're so good at!" I heard Kyle yelling at me. My eyes groggily opened. The sun was just barely peaking over the horizon and under any other circumstances, I would have marveled at the beauty of it. But right now, we were being attacked.
Jumping out of my sleeping bag, I touched the ground and froze it causing our attackers to spin into each other. I looked around to see Lexi throwing flaming punches and Simon fending off attacks with a double bladed sword. I looked behind me to see Kyle trying to open a gate. His eyes were closed in concentration as he mouthed words.
"Katie! Pay attention!" Lexi yelled at me. She punched a guy who was about to attack me.
"You shut up!" I yelled back. "Ice make crossbow!" A large frozen crossbow appeared in my hands and I got off a few shots before it faded away. Nothing we did made a difference though. Wave after wave of guys came at us. Kyle finally got a gate open and now Taurus was fighting with us. Just the spirit I wanted to see.
