"Hey, Blair! Wait up!" I heard my friend, Evan Ross, call to me. I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I didn't notice him. I look up from the papers the Slayer Society sent me. Yes, the same Slayer Society that deals with vampires. They also deal with demons, too, as you can see. I quickly put the papers in my bag and turn towards him. "Hey, Evan. What's up?" I ask, putting on a fake smile. I had just come from my parents' funeral. Everyone, except me, Evan, my friend Raven Madison, and my sister Sky, thinks my parents' died in a car crash. But we know that they were killed by a vampire. Evan, Raven, and Sky are also Hunters, but only Raven and Sky are Demon Hunters, like me. Evan is a Vampire Slayer in training. So far, he's killed twenty vampires, whereas Raven, Sky, and I have killed over a hundred demons together and the occasional vampire. Evan catches up to me and wraps me in a hug. I'm shocked that he did this because I'm not used to people showing me affection. My parent's never showed me affection because they wanted to toughen me up to fight and kill. "Evan? What are you doing?" I ask him, nervous. "I'm giving you a hug. I know they left you when you were thirteen, but they were sill your parents'. I'm so sorry, Blair." Evan says, still hugging me. I awkwardly pat his back. "I-It's fine, Ev. I'll be alright. Don't worry about me." I tell him. He lets go of me and looks at me. "So, what was that bunch of papers you stuffed in your bag?" He asks me, eyeing my bag curiously. "Somthing from the Society. A condolence letter and my next assignment." I tell him, sighing. "Let me read the letter, please." I look at him like he's crazy. He holds out his hand for me to put the letter in it. I sigh and open my bag. "You're so persistent." I tell him, handing him the letter. "Before you read it, let's go to my house. I haven't read it yet." I tell him, grabbing his hand and dragging him to my house. "Kay." He says simply. I roll my eyes at him cause he's always agreeing with me whenever he can. We reach my back porch and I take out my key and unlock the back door. I open it and turn on the kitchen light. My demon hound, Kira, greets me with a bark and a lick on the hand. Yes, I have a demon hound. She was a gift to me from Hades, the God of the Underworld, for saving his son from Zeus. Yes, we believe in the Greek Gods. They're real. I've met them and they are not to be messed with. Trust me. "Okay, Ev. You can open the letter and read it out loud." I say, flopping down on the couch and scratching Kira's ear. "Kay." He says again, taking out the letter and reopening it. He start to read it out loud:
"To our most successful Hunter, Blair Eventide,
We are truy sorry to hear about what happened with your parents'. They were the absolute best Hunters this Society has ever seen. We hope you can live up to their reputation and surpass it to make your own. As our sorrows hold, we regret to inform you that you will not have time to mourn them. Your next mission is to find the Vampire, Dimitri Eventide. His last known location was New York City. You and Evan Ross are to work together on this mission. Good luck.
Sincerely, The Slayer Society"
Evan stops reading to stare at me. I pretend not to notice. "Damn. We have to go after Dimitri?" Evan asks me. I look up at him and nod. "Yup. We have to go after my brother. Sorry, Evan. I know how much you respected him, but he's different now. He's not the same anymore." I tell him, watching his face fall. "Damn. But why us? Why not someone else?" He asks. "I don't know, Ev." I say, and shrug as I stand up from the couch and head up the stairs. Evan follows me to my room. "So, you're what? Okay with us having to kill your only brother?" Evan asks me. I shrug as I take off my skull tank top. "I have to be. I was always taught at the Academy that, whoever becomes a vampire or demon, they are not themselves anymore. Remember, Evan? We were always taught that. It's why I don't feel anything when I kill demons and the occasional vampire. I remember that they are not themselves and that they would want to be put out of their misery as soon as possible. We have to do this, Evan. We have to." I say, going to my closet and opening it. I move my clothes around and look for my night tank top. I find it and put it on. I then shimmy out of my black pants and Doc Martens and I go to my dresser. I pull out my skull night pants and put them on. "So, when do we leave?" Evan asks me, watching me undress and dress. "I don't know," I say. "I'll go to the Society tomorrow and ask when we leave. Kay?" I ask him after brushing my hair and putting it in a braid. "Yeah. That'd be fine with me." Evan shrugs, coming over to me and giving my cheek a kiss. Yes, I know what you're thinking and you're right. Evan and I are in a relationship. He's my boyfriend, deal with it. I grab his hand and lead him to the bed. We lay down and his arms snake around me to hold me close. "Blair? What would you say, and do, if I told you I love you?" Evan asks me. I turn my head to stare at him. "I, um, I would say that I might love you too, but I'm still not used to people showing me affection yet." I watch as the hope fades from his eyes. "I'm sorry, Evan. I just need more time to get used to affection. Please?" I ask him. He nods his head and sighs. "I understand. You need more time. I get it, I really do." He says, kissing my lips. "Just making sure you do." I tell him, breaking the kiss. I close my eyes and fall asleep.
