AN: I just spontaneously wrote this because CHRISTMAS IS TOMORROW and I'm excited. Side note, if you understand the title you're my favorite person.
On Christmas Eve - well, early Christmas morning, technically - Jack Kelly woke up in the middle of the night, and it took him a moment to realize why, grinning once he did. He sat up in bed, glanced over at Katherine, who was still asleep, and got out of bed, being careful not to wake her yet.
He crossed the room to the window, un-latching and opening it. He stuck his head outside and inhaled deeply, his grin widening as he did so.
"Hey, Kath." He called to his wife softly, but loud enough to wake her up, and she groaned.
"Jack, not even children get up this early on Christmas morning."
"Nah, it ain't that."
"Then what?"
"I smell snow."
"No, you don't." Katherine contradicted him stubbornly, even as she sat up, and he laughed.
"Yeah, I do, c'mon, I got your coat." He tossed her coat to her before putting his own coat on. She stood up and pulled it on, knowing from experience that he wouldn't let her go back to sleep.
"It's not supposed to snow for another week." She told him as she pulled on her boots and he tied his shoelaces.
"Yeah, but it's Christmas, and that's more fun than next week. Won't be a white Christmas if it snows next week. Besides, it's gonna snow tonight. I smell it."
Katherine rolled her eyes, but followed her husband out onto the fire escape anyway, climbing up on the roof after him. They leaned against the railing next to each other, staring up at the sky.
"When is it going to start?" She asked him, and he shrugged.
"Any minute now."
She leaned her head against Jack's shoulder as they waited, and sure enough, after a few minutes, snow began to fall. Before long, the layer of snow that had fallen on the roof began to deepen.
"As much as I hate when you're right, I'm glad you were right about this." She told him, turning to face him.
Jack nodded. "And y'know what, as much as I don't like this city," he bent down to gather up some snow in his hands, "I'm glad it's got roofs like this, it's good for snowball fights."
Katherine gave him a look. "Jack Kelly, don't you dare."
She took a few steps away from him, breaking into a run as he chased her playfully, his snowball hitting it's target that was Katherine's back.
She shook her head. "That's it." She declared with a grin. "This means war." She formed her own snowball and took off across the roof towards her husband.
And the two Kelly's spent (very) early Christmas morning laughing and running around in the snow on the rooftop, and they wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
