AN: Hey, an update! Wow! Guys, I am so so sorry for the lack of updates, I've had so much school work lately. I should be updating Wherever You Go soon. Speaking of, is anyone still reading that story? If so, I'd love some suggestions on how to make it better! Anyway, back to this story. The character Desi was requested by AllyTheProudGeek. I hope she's close enough to how you described her!
Davey was fuming as he walked down the sidewalk, dragging a scowling Les behind him.
"I said I was sorry!" Les complained.
"Les, you got suspended!"
"It's not a big deal!"
"You may think that now, but just wait until Mom and Dad find out." Davey pointed out, and his younger brother winced.
"They make everything seem like a big deal, but it isn't. I barely did anything!" he insisted.
"Yeah, no, of course not, you just punched another kid."
"I barely touched him, he was overreacting!"
"Les!" Ever since Les turned ten, he had been getting into more and more trouble at school, and brushing it all off as nothing, and Davey wasn't sure how much more of it he could take. It had been about six months since their dad had lost his job and he hadn't found a new one yet, so Davey was trying to keep as much stress off of both of his parents as he could, but Les wasn't making it any easier.
"Sorry Davey." The younger boy mumbled, and Davey sighed.
"You have to stop doing stuff like this, Les."
"Uh, Davey." Les tried to say, but his brother stopped him.
"Mom and Dad are under enough stress right now as it is, you can't add keep adding more to it."
"Davey!"
"Don't try to make excuses for this, Les."
"Davey, look out!" Les tried one more time, but it was too late and Davey was on the ground. He groaned as he landed and his books scattered everywhere.
"Why didn't you tell me that there was a fire hydrant there?"
"I was trying, but you wouldn't listen."
"Oh my goodness, are you okay?" A new voice cut in, this one obviously belonging to a young lady. The owner of the voice ran over to them, obviously trying to look as proper as she could manage while still getting to them as fast as she could. Davey pushed himself up into a sitting position on the sidewalk as she approached them.
"I'm fine." He muttered, embarrassed that she had seen him trip over a very obvious fire hydrant.
"Are you sure? It looked like you fell pretty hard." The girl insisted, coming to a stop in front of them.
"Yes, I'm sure." Davey answered her more clearly this time, realizing that this girl was genuinely concerned and not just trying to make fun of him. He started to pick up his scattered books and she let out a small gasp.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I should've helped sooner!" She began picking up his books and he gave her a small smile as he stood up.
"You really didn't have to do that, thank you."
"Don't be silly, of course I did." The girl handed him her books and he was finally able to get a good look at her. She looked like she was about two years younger than himself, but nobody would be able to tell that unless they were... well, Davey. She had long, ginger colored hair, and she was petite, yet she still looked very mature. "I'm Desi by the way, and I'm sorry for my horrible manners." She continued, and Davey suppressed a laugh at that, she had gone out of her way to help him and now she was saying that she was being rude for not introducing herself sooner.
"I'm David Jacobs but my friends all call me Davey. And, for the record, I think your manners are far from horrible."
"Well, it's nice to meet you Davey." As soon as the words left her mouth, she realized what she had called him. "Oh, I didn't mean to offend you, by calling you Davey, I mean. I understand that it might be a nickname just for your close friends, I won't do it again."
"Hey, you didn't offend me at all, in fact, a lot of people call me that. Besides, after what just happened I would consider you a friend. Relax." He assured her, and so she did relax – visibly. Just as she was about to open her mouth to speak again, she was cut off by a loud cough from Les. "Oh! Oh, right. Desi, this is my little brother, Les." Desi turned and smiled at the younger boy.
"It's very nice to meet you, Les." She said, and he smiled back.
"You too." He said simply before turning to his brother. "Davey, if we're late getting home, it's going to add even more to our parent's stress." He quoted Davey's words from earlier while giving him a pointed look.
"Oh, right! Desi, I'm really sorry, but we have to go. I, uh, I'd like to meet again sometime, though." The older boy told her apologetically, but Desi nodded.
"I get it." She thought for a minute. "How about we meet here tomorrow at the same time and we'll figure out somewhere to go from there."
"Alright, I'll see you then." He agreed, and she gave him one last smile before turning and walking away. The two brothers stood watching her for a minute, and once the couldn't see her anymore, Les decided she was out of hearing distance.
"So, Davey, when are you going to ask her out?" He teased, but Davey just shook his head and smiled.
"C'mon, let's go, so Mom and Dad can yell at you already." He said, but all he could think about was the girl that had just left, and how Les' joking idea might not be too far off from what he actually wanted to do. What a girl...
