AN: This is just (a LOT of) mindless fluff and I apologize but happy Valentine's Day!
It was February of 1900, Jack and Katherine's first February together, and on the twelfth of that month, Katherine approached Jack while he was selling. Jack grinned when he saw her, and put the paper he'd been trying to sell back into his bag, pulling her in for a quick kiss and relishing in the slight feeling of rebellion he got from their display of public affection.
"Hey, Kath." He greeted her, his arms finding their way around her waist.
"Hi." She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I can't stay long, I snuck out of my office."
"Why, Miss Pulitzer, sneaking out? How rebellious." Jack teased with a smirk, and Katherine rolled her eyes, smacking his chest playfully.
"Hush, you. I wanted to see if you wanted to go out for dinner on Wednesday night."
By 'out for dinner', Jack knew she meant somewhere else besides Jacobi's, so he mentally counted how much money he had saved up before nodding.
"Yeah, I can do that. What's the occasion?" They usually only went out somewhere if it was a holiday, one of their birthdays, or if either of them had made more money than usual that day and wanted to do something special, but Jack didn't think that any of those things were happening on Wednesday.
"It's Valentine's Day." Katherine informed him, and he gave her a confused look.
"It's what?"
"Valentine's Day... you do know what that is, don't you?"
Jack shook his head. "Never heard of it."
Katherine wanted to kick herself. Why did she just assume that Jack knew what it was? It wasn't exactly the most talked about holiday of the year, after all.
"Well, it's not really too much of a big deal, it's just a day when couples get together and celebrate their relationship."
Jack nodded slowly, even though he didn't really understand. Wasn't that what anniversaries were for? Still, he agreed.
"Yeah, okay. I'll meet you at your place on Wednesday, then?"
Katherine nodded. "Sounds perfect." She gave him another quick kiss. "Bye."
As Jack watched her turn and head back in the direction of The Sun, he knew he was gonna have to ask Davey some questions about this Valentine's Day thing.
oOo
"Hey Dave, you ever heard of Valentine's Day?" Jack and Davey were heading back to the Lodging House after selling, and he figured it was as good a time as any to ask.
Davey nodded. "Of course."
Jack felt slightly indignant at the fact that everyone seemed to know about this holiday except for him, but he continued. "Can you tell me about it?"
"Well, in ancient Rome, Christians were being persecuted and couldn't get married, so Saint Valentine - "
Jack cut him off with a groan. "Don't care about all that stuff, Davey."
"Then what...? Oh, the romantic aspect of it?" Jack nodded. "I mean don't exactly have much experience when it comes to that... but basically you just get together with whoever your with and... celebrate your relationship, I guess? I'm not too sure what couples do on Valentine's Day, but my parents always went out together, it's supposed to be this night of romance. Why do you ask?"
"Katherine asked me to go out to dinner with her on Wednesday. Am I supposed to do anything, y'know, special?"
Davey shrugged. "My parents always gave each other a small gift, but I don't guess you have to."
