Half Past Midnight

AN: This is probably very bad but it was inspired by the fact that it's currently 1 AM and I've been working on my paper and not sleeping. And also by the fact that I wanted to write some Jackrine because I feel like I haven't done that in forever. So I hope you enjoy my fluffy sleep deprived mess that is this!

Jack loved staying up and watching his wife write. He wasn't quite sure what her boss was having her do all day other than working, considering the first thing she did after dinner was get right back in front of that typewriter, but Jack didn't really mind. He loved watching her eyes light up when she wrote about something she was passionate about. He loved hearing her muttering softly to herself. He loved seeing her get so immersed in her writing that it was like she wasn't even there anymore, but on the paper itself.

She loved to write, and Jack loved to watch her do it. And it wasn't until he looked at the clock one night and saw that it was half-past midnight, that he realized there might be a problem.

"Hey, Ace?"

No response.

"Katherine."

Nothing.

"Hey, Kath. Ace. Katherine. Kath."

"Hmm?"

"Don't you think it's time for us to be getting some sleep?"

"Not yet." She answered vaguely, making Jack wonder if she had actually heard his question.

"Ace, it's almost one in the morning. You gotta be up in six hours."

"Mhm."

He'd lost her again.

He couldn't believe he'd stayed up this late without falling asleep. He had work early in the morning too, after all. But it didn't feel right going to sleep and leaving his wife out her to write about - he craned his neck to look over her shoulder - some sort of flying machine. That didn't seem worth sleep deprivation.

"Katherine?"

"Hmm?"

"You almost done with that one?"

"With the first draft. Then I have to go back and work on the second."

He didn't like that answer, but at least it meant she was listening.

"It's late, I really think you should -"

Evidently frustrated by his frequent interruptions, she tore her eyes away from the page to look at him. He could see her exhaustion that she apparently hadn't noticed.

"You can go to bed, Jack. I promise I'll join you as soon as I finish the second draft."

"By the time you finish the second draft, it'll be time for me to wake up."

"I'll be done in at least two hours, I promise."

"Ace."

"I can't stop now, Jack. These two men, the Wright brothers, their theories are just fascinating! If I stop now, this article won't be nearly as good as if I keep going."

"It ain't gonna be any good if you write it while you're exhausted. Or if you fall asleep in the middle of it."

Katherine sighed. "I'm not exhausted, I'm just a little tired, which is to be expected."

"Yeah, 'cause it's half past midnight."

"Jack - "

She was cut off before she could argue anymore by Jack's lips pressing themselves on hers. She melted instantly as he moved closer, but reluctantly pulled away after a few amazing moments.

"Come to bed?"

"Jack..." Simply his body heat was making her feel like a warm bed was exactly what she needed. "Just let me finish this first draft."

He shook his head. "The Wright brothers'll still be there in six hours."

"I need to finish it."

"Not tonight. Tonight all you need to do is let me carry you to the bedroom and sleep."

"I... The article isn't due for another week."

"See? Nothing to get all worked up over."

Katherine pondered this for a moment, before nodding and standing up, stretching out her stiff muscles.

"Fine. But only if you kiss me again first."

Jack grinned. This was why her loved her. He stood up and kissed her firmly, scooping her up into his arms even as he did so. She pulled away and rested her head on his chest with a soft sigh, and he carried his tired girl off to sleep.
