28. And now he is here

"Robin", Jane said nodding in my direction. I knew what it meant. I am the chosen one. I am going to be the one who retraces the events of the past. Why does it have to be me??
Cause you are the only one who knows exactly what happened, you fool.
Well, that makes sense but still, it's not fair.
"Alright then. There is one thing I want you people to understand, I don't want you to interrupt me. Cause once I begin with it, there is no stopping me."
The three of them hummed in approval and hence I began.
"I am going to start with the day your father left your home, Jane. It was when we were twelve and Jane had been going through a rough phase in her life. She was really happy when her father left their home, I had never seen her happier. She was jumping around like a crazy ball and I was more than happy to be a part of her craziness. We danced through the night and greeted the morning with heavy eyes. It was the best night of our lives"
Jane smiled. I knew she was recalling our time spent together. It really was the best night of our lives.
"The next few years were fun. If you call a man who plays with a lot of women a womaniser, then Jane was definitely a maniser. That is not a word but you get what I am trying to say, right? She dated and she dated a lot. Every guy wanted to be with her, even me for a short period of time but I got over it."
"You used to like her??", Matt asked then turned his face in Irene's direction, "And you knew?"
"Everyone knew but you don't need to worry now. I am not a competition anymore. If I were, you would not be sitting here, I am sure of that"
He flicked his hand to say As-if-I-would-let-that-happen. He is falling for her and he is falling hard.
"Anyways, where was I?"
"In this diner and before that in our apartment", Jane said.
"So I had a mini crush on her like everyone else and she went out with all of them. I did not even get a chance. And thank god for that. Now I have Irene as my girlfriend. She is a lot better than you, you know"
I glanced at Jane and she gave me her I-don't-give-a-shit look.
"When we are seventeen, enters Ethan Hurley. A quiet guy who talks to no one but gets the attention of all the people around him since he is hot. The maniser that Jane was, she approached him and it turns out, he was not dumb, he could talk. After a few weeks of drawing him out of his shell, she finally asked him out and his response was positive. He was being asked out by the most beautiful girl in the town, who would say no, right? They went on a date and had a great time. I remember how Jane used to phase out when she was with him. It was as if he was everything to her. No one could take his place. All was fine until___"
"Until what?", Matt asked.
"I am not finished, I just need some water"
I poured myself a glass of water and resumed with the story.
"The interesting thing about Jane was that even when she played around with so many guys, she did not let anyone of them kiss her. She used to say that her first kiss was reserved for someone special. You know who that special someone was?"
"Ethan"
Matt said tapping his feet on the floor with a greater pressure than before. Jane slid her hand around his elbow to soothe him.
"Exactly. He was her first kiss and I assure you, Jane, he certainly is special. Well, what then, the kiss led to other stuff which you all probably have guessed. The day after that, she was happier than the time her father had left. Once again, I was the one to witness it."
"Weren't you two dating at that time?", Jane asked.
"Yes we were"
Irene's voice almost seemed angry.
"We had been together for two years then.", I said.
"Didn't you have a crush on her then?", Matt asked.
"No, that was when I was fourteen and we are talking about the time we were seventeen. Alright, let's get back to the moment when Jane went crazy for the second time in her life. We had fun that afternoon and in the evening, I walked her to Ethan's home where they were supposed to meet. It was locked. He would be out was what we thought but no, we were wrong, he never returned after that. Changed his number and left Jane alone. For a long time she hoped for his return but he didn't come back"
"And now he is here", Matt said.
"And now he is here", I repeated.
