"Where are we off to now?" Irene asked.
"Our usual spot" Augustus answered.
"You have got to be kidding me. The water would be freezing."
"When is it not?"
"True. So, we really are going to visit Arcata Bay?"
"Indeed we are," I said interrupting them.
Today was one hell of a day. I don't know who decided to take a dip in the water but it was refreshing. This conversation took place after our meeting with Ms Pearson. She was as sweet as ever. Our batch was the first under her and since then she has been a loyal and a very important part of the school. Even though our homes are here, when we visit together we don't go to our homes. The purpose of our coming here would be defeated if we stopped by our houses. We would not be able to spend time with each other and would end up staying with our families. We reached the bay around four in the evening and everyone was exhausted.
Jane got down from the truck first and everyone else followed. This is how it always is when we are around a water body. Water soothes Jane like nothing else can. Sitting by the water and listening to the nature playing its harmonies is her favourite past time."You people coming in?" I asked entering the ice cold water which brought shivers down my spine.
"I will join you," Augustus said.
"I am coming too, hon" Irene shouted, her voice trying to hide the excitement that enveloped her.
"Jane?"
"No guys.... You people have fun. I will just sit by here. Diving in my melancholy seems like a better option than diving in that" she said and I understood that she was trying pretty hard not to show the effect of the bad memories consuming her. Our hometown is a place which is calming and disturbing for her at the same time.
As the three of us spent our time splashing water on each other and getting hit by the waves, Jane sat silently smiling at us clicking pictures. We posed for her and sometimes when we were lucky, she laughed at the faces we made.Pictures are flickers of our past, scraps, tiny pieces which hold great importance to the person who has lived the time. One picture can make a person smile, it can make a person cry. A picture is not just a piece of paper, it is a lot more than that. It shows that we have had our strong and weak moments. We have had moments of joy and happiness. In our gloomy days, photographs contain the power of reminding a person that a little rain is required for a rainbow to appear.
This is what Jane believes. Her collection of photographs is larger than anyone I have ever met. She loves capturing moments with her camera. That is exactly what she did today. And it was memorable. When I turn forty and hopefully if I do not have Alzheimer's, I am sure that I will look upon this time that I spent with the most valuable people in my life and a smile would find its way on my face. These are the days that most people do not get to spend. Some due to lack of good friends, some due to a shortage of money and others because they do not wish to live this way. I am grateful that I don't belong to any of those categories. The greatest love a man can experience is not the love of his wife or his children; it's the love of friendship. Friendship cannot exist without love and love can not exist without friendship. Both of them are each other's counterparts and the person who has this kind of love in his life should feel thankful.
