Chapter 18

~Chapter 18~

~Katniss POV~

After we eat breakfast, Effie tells us to go and put on decent clothes that we can travel in while we head to the studio to do an interview with Ceaser. I go up to my room and throw on some jeans and a blue tshirt and quickly braid my hair. After that I put on some sandals and make my way back downstairs. My engagement ring is in my pocket at the moment because I don't want Effie or Haymitch to see it. I will hide it until I'm about to go on stage and then I will slip it on. This will be the perfect way to announce Peeta and I's engagement.

Once we get to the studio, my prep team dresses me in a sparkly gold skirt that goes down of just above my knees, some gold gladiator sandals, and a white tshirt that has gold short sleeves. They fix my hair in curls and do my makeup pretty light. I still look like myself when they are all finished.

While they were getting me ready, I had hidden my ring in my hand and just held onto it. Now I'm about to go on stage and I slip it on. Next thing I know I hear "Let us welcome the star crossed lovers from District 12, Katniss and Peeta!"

The crowd goes wild as Peeta and I walk out on stage. He escorts me over to the small couch and we sit down together. Now that the games are over there is no pressure during interviews anymore and I love it. I lay my head on Peeta's shoulder and the crowd goes wild!

"Okay calm down calm down!" Says Ceaser motioning towards the crowd, "Alright you two, how has things been? How are you liking the Capitol so far?"

"It's even awesome! Everyone has been so nice and kind! It's kind of surreal to be here for something other than the games." Says Peeta. I nod in agreement.

"Yeah I'm sure it is better now." Agrees Ceaser.

Ceaser and Peeta talk most of the time and I add in a few things. Most of the time I'm just starring off into space thinking about how I'm going to be with Peeta for the rest of my life.

When I snap back into the moment I hear Ceaser saying, "So, is there anything new with your relationship?"

"Well um..." Starts Peeta.

"We got engaged!" I blurt out. The crowd goes wild and I see the shocked faces of Effie and Haymitch in the front row. I blush and start to tell Panem all about how Peeta engaged and how beautiful the dinner was.

When the interview is over, we say goodbye and that we will do an interview from home soon to update about wedding plans. We exit the stage and are greeted by a hysterical prep team and Effie.

They finally manage to calm down and we get into the car and head back to the hotel. Right away, I go up to my room and change into comfortable sweat pants and a tshirt. When I get back downstairs I hear Haymitch on the phone with someone. "Yes, well it was a shock to me too. Yes I know you feel betrayed. Okay well speaking of your daughter, here she is right now." Says Haymitch thrusting the phone at me.

I take the phone in my suddenly sweaty hand and cautiously put it up to my ear. "Um hello?" I say slowly into it.

"Hello Katniss, it's your mother here." Answers the voice on the other end.

"Oh hi mom. Long time no see or talk huh?" I answer trying to sound as casual as possible.

"Cut it out Katniss. You know I'm mad. When were you going to tell me that you got engaged? I'm your mother for heavens sake! Don't you think that if something big like that happens in your life, I shouldn't have to find out about it over television?!" She screams.

"Listen mom I'm sorry. I should've called you. But I'm not that sorry to be honest. You're the one who left me in 12 all alone. You abandoned me yet again and I can never forgive you. Why would I go out of my way to tell you things when you never go out of your way for me? You've hurt me so much! This is a happy time for me and you have to ruin it yet again. Thanks." I say and hang up on her.

I storm off into my room and collapse onto my bed and enter a nightmare filled sleep.
