Book Vs Film

Alec's suggestion stayed in my mind all evening as I attempted to distract myself. I couldn't help but question how it might have ended. Would the playful, careless James that I saw yesterday have lasted any longer?

I spent my evening curled up in bed heavily engrossed in a book with my fairy lights sending a warm glow throughout the room. I loved this part of the weekend where I would spend hours getting lost in someone else's reality in the comfort of my bed. It was my tranquility, and the only way to distract myself from thinking about the boy in the opposite room.

I had just reached the best part of the story when a knock on the door reluctantly tore my attention away from the pages that were desperately waiting to be read.

Mum opened the door before I could even answer.

"Sweetie, we haven't seen you all day. What are you doing all cooped up in here?" She folded her arms whilst giving me her typical eyebrow raising face.

I held up my book in response, knowing that it was enough of an answer without actually having to say anything. Mum and I both shared a mutual love of books, whilst she preferred medical books unsurprisingly, I adored attention grabbing dramas and romances. Still she understood that sometimes a book can take you away from reality.

Her attention peaked up at my revelation. She jumped on my bed, sitting crossed legged.

"Is this a new story? ...What is it about?" She asked.

I laughed at her child like behaviour, "It sure is! It's hard to describe, but imagine a mix between 'Love Rosie' and 'Me before You'"

Mum laughed, "Well there's no surprise none of us have heard from you all day seeing as that sounds like your perfect book!"

I just shrugged, finally placing the book down. For someone so smart it really confused me how little she knew about what was going on under her own household.

"Anyway, we are all watching a film together downstairs. So you're going to have to leave that book of yours for a few hours and spend some time with us. I know it'll be hard for you, but this separation will do you good." She spoke sarcastically whilst giving me a cheeky wink.

Grabbing my hand so I had no choice but to follow her, she dragged me downstairs.

I was quite surprised to see that everyone else, including James were already sat downstairs waiting for the film to start.

Alec had taken my usual seat, leaving the only space free on the sofa by James. Alec caught my eye giving me a slight smirk.

James was led across the whole sofa, leaving me awkwardly stood in the middle of the lounge. To avoid the awkwardness of asking James to move I was about to sit on the floor, just as James moved his legs. They all continued their conversation as if I didn't exist. I grabbed the comforter as I perched myself on the furthest edge of the sofa, giving myself and James the most space possible.

Mum turned off the lights before starting the film, I couldn't help but notice how snuggled up they were. It was as if they were the only ones in the room. I couldn't remember one day that Mum and Dad were ever like that.

I was so engrossed in my own thoughts that I missed James speaking to me.

"Princess...princess."

A foot kicking my side distracted me from my thoughts.

"Oww" I yelled whilst rubbing my side.

Numerous 'sushes' were heard throughout the room as my outburst interrupted the film.

I turned to James asking, "What the hell was that for?"

He smirked before replying, "You weren't answering, and I had to do something to get your attention." He shrugged as if it was so obvious.

"You couldn't have tapped me or something, instead of kicking me?" I whispered, avoiding being told off for disturbing the film once again.

He chuckled, "Where is the fun in that princess?"

I rolled my eyes. "What did you want anyway?" Nearly forgetting that there must have been a reason he wanted my attention.

"Oh, yeah" He paused before continuing, "I don't bite you know, you don't have to hang off the sofa like your life depends on it."

I rolled my eyes, letting go of the edge of the sofa that I was unaware that I had clung onto all this time. I moved towards the centre of the sofa, still leaving a big enough gap so that I had no way of touching James.

He gave a satisfied smirk as he swung his legs up on top of me so that he could lie along the whole sofa.

"Hey!" I pushed his legs slightly, "That's not fair! How come you get to lie down?"

He swung his legs off me with a sigh. I wore a satisfied smile thinking that I had actually won.

A hand on my waist swiftly grabbed me, pulling me down roughly onto a hard chest. I looked up to see a smug smirk.

"Now we both get to lie down." He chuckled to himself, knowing full well that he just won.
