"When this practice match is done and we go home, I'm moving."
Kensuke's soft spoken voice has always been your favorite thing about him. A rare treat coming from a boy who's constantly hiding behind those two puppets ever since you met. Although this time, hearing his tone so heavy and doused in regret fills you with dread.
Your partner was equally as shocked as you were. "What do you mean?" Valt asked, not wanting to believe it.
Kensuke brings up his puppets again. "It's convenient for my family's job," Ker says.
"So I have to go to a different school, too." Beus adds.
"Is this what you were talking about yesterday?" You softly ask in the most gentle tone you could. You were too afraid one little thing said wrong would cause him to clam up. You were right, unfortunately, as Kensuke bunches up his shoulders upon hearing your dejected voice.
Valt turns to you in disbelief before looking at Kensuke again. "No way. . ." Valt whispered.
"Even though I waited for something like this. . ." Beus continues.
"I have to quit the team, too," Ker finishes.
That sets Valt off. Finding the idea ridiculous, he steps forward with a stubborn huff. "You can't do that! You can't quit!"
With what little confidence he had left, Kensuke lowers his puppets again to speak. "I don't want to quit. If only I didn't have to. . ." His voice falters at the end. His lip quivers as so did his shoulders. His green eyes became glossy with emotion. In a split second of irrational thinking, Kensuke turned around and, in an attempt to not let any of you see him in that state, ran.
The only thing was—you were all standing near the edge of the cliff you just climbed up to.
It all happened so fast. His foot came dangerously close to the edge as the unstable rocky ground gave out. Instincts forced your legs to move. Quicker than your teammates, you immediately outstretched your hand to grab whatever you could of your friend. From the back of the group, you became front and center.
Your eyes were blown big and wide. Adrenaline typically surges through your veins during battle, but they doubled in dose when it came to saving your friend's life. You don't know who the hell had their arms wrapped tightly around your waist—effectively keeping you from falling along with Kensuke. All that mattered to you was keeping Kensuke from meeting an untimely death.
The sight in front of you is haunting. The teen dangled above several yards from the ground. The only thing saving him was your deathly tight grip on his wrist that was sure to cause bruising later. The forest trees below looked sharper than you remembered—they looked akin to knife-like spikes. The very real danger of death or injury was just a miscalculated release away.
"Kensuke?! What the heck man?!" You mindlessly shout in fear. "Do you not realize how stupid that was?!"
"What do you think you're doing, you idiot?!" You hear Valt yell right behind you, almost close to your ears but you didn't care.
