Chapter 11: Learning of the Inevitable

Adrian's moment of peace didn't last nearly long enough. It's as if Mr. Woltz lives to annoy, which he probably does, just for Adrian.

"Hypothetically, what would happen if you decided to terminate your employment with the Cloud World Council?" Mr. Woltz asks as they run along, while the younger vampire struggles to keep a hold of an unconscious teenage werewolf.

Oh, how his life has changed drastically. If only he could leave Lucas in the clearing without being judged by his friends back in their city Cain.

"I'm not quitting my job, so why does it matter?" He deflects the invasive question.

"Why are you getting defensive, Adrian? It's just a question." Mr. Woltz teases with a blank face so he's unable to figure out what game his sire is playing at.

"I just don't see the reason of answering an irrelevant question. You did say it was hypothetical." He points out, trying to evade the subject but getting nowhere because of the extremely stubborn vampire beside him.

"Then let's make it a real life, could actually happen, question." Mr. Woltz says harshly as he pulls him to a quick stop. Adrian has to adjust Lucas in his arms to keep them both from toppling over. "So answer me this, what if you tried to leave their organization?"

Adrian rolls his eyes at the older vampire's tone, which conveys that he won't take no for an answer this time. "If I quit, they'd ask me to stay. They'd probably make me a deal, try to convince me to stay. If I still want to leave, they'll have to let me go, just like any other job."

Mr. Woltz let out a short laugh incredulously before replying sharply. "No, no they wouldn't. You are lying to yourself and you know it."

Adrian drops Lucas to the ground, far from gently, and crosses his arms angrily to face his sire. "Oh, yeah? And what else would they do? Kill me? That doesn't make any sense."

"Hmm. Then tell me, how did you come to be an employee of theirs in the first place?" Mr. Woltz inquires, making the younger vampire feel a bit uneasy.

"That was years ago. How would I remember that?" He protests, not really answering the question at hand and not being very truthful either.

"Cut the crap, Adrian. You remember. It wasn't that long ago." Mr. Woltz answers, mirroring Adrian's defensive stance.

"Alright." He exclaims in frustration, putting a hand to his temple and closing his eyes to calm the bubbling rage inside of him.

"One of the Council members came to me after I'd first encountered my cousin Monique, before we started pretending to be siblings. I wanted to bring her with me like she asked because she had run away from home and I hadn't seen any family in a while, but it was too dangerous because hunters were after me."

"So the Cloud World Council helped you, right? They offered their assistance, then they offered you a job." Mr. Woltz correctly infers.

"Yeah, so?" Adrian prompts, wanting to get to the end of this conversation so he can be done with it. But he has a feeling he won't be done with this for a while, as long as Mr. Woltz sticks around.
