Chapter 21: A Hunter's First Test

Once Lucas confronts Mason and Jerica, getting caught up on everything that went on with Cade and Owen, he's more perplexed than ever.

"Why did you wait so long to tell me?" Lucas inquires after the explanation.

"So much has been going on... we just didn't find the time." Jerica jumps in, cutting off whatever Mason was about to say.

"And where did you get a taser, Jerica? And do you always carry it around?" Lucas demands to know, wondering why his sister would be carrying around a weapon that she could get in trouble for having if she's been bringing it to school.

"Oh, that wasn't a taser. I pulled this out," Jerica announces, sounding pretty proud of herself as she pulls a black Gameboy from her pocket that could resemble a taser. "I pretended it was a taser so he wouldn't know about magic, and used my electric power to shock him."

"And why did you have that in your pocket?" Mason questions, finally joining the conversation. The electronic is way outdated and he didn't even realize she still owned it.

Jerica shrugs nonchalantly. "I have to have something to do in class."

"You're supposed to pay attention in class." Lucas points out, always being the responsible one out of the Hallow siblings.

She scowls at her goody-two-shoes brother. "I'm not failing, so why does it matter?"

"Hey!" Mason says to regain their attention. "Aren't we supposed to be talking about Cade and his friends? I thought we would be planning on how to deal with them instead of fighting with each other."

Lucas sighs, turning away from his sister to keep himself from continuing their argument. "You're right. But I don't know where to start."

He throws his hands up in exasperation, clueless as to how they let this happen. "How do you deal with someone who knows that you're supernatural and is trying to blackmail you with the information?"

"Teach him a lesson?" Jerica suggests hopefully, wanting to try out some more defensive techniques that she's been working on.

Shocking Cade's goon the other day to save their cousin Owen was the most fun she's had in a while. It would be nice to have an excuse to do it again.

"No!" Lucas snaps, horrified that his little sister would want to go hurt some stupid high school kid. "Cade may be a bully, but he's human. It would be wrong to use our heightened strength and your magic to seek him out for a fight."

"Stupid moral compass." Jerica mutters in disappointment.

"The best thing for us to do right now is act natural. Pretend nothing's going on and don't let them catch us doing something inhuman." Lucas concludes the best strategy. "That means no magic and no extra strength or speed at school or in public at all. Got it?"
