Chapter 18: Watchful Eyes
As Lena hurries out of class to get to lunch, she spots a familiar head of black and blonde hair.
She passes by her locker to follow Owen, pushing through the crowd that's going in the opposite direction, towards the cafeteria.
He waves to someone as he walks past them, shocking Lena from the strangeness of it. He's waving to Jerica, who smiles at him as if they're friends.
Why didn't Lena's best friend mention to her that she's on speaking terms with Owen? That seems like something to mention, because he's been avoiding everyone since the big spectacle with Mr. Woltz exposing Owen as supernatural.
Lena loses sight of both of them, causing her to wonder where he could've gone. Moving over to the wall, she finally sees him at the end of the hallway, making his way out the back door to the football field.
With a dismissive shake of her head, Lena tightens her grip on her textbook and turns around to go back to her locker and put her stuff away.
She waits until she has her lunch tray and is sitting with her friends before saying anything about what she saw.
"I saw Owen on the way here." She blurts out after a few minutes of silently eating.
"It's strange that all of what happened yesterday is being completely ignored. Everything's normal, with Owen avoiding us as we go to our classes like normal. Doesn't it bother you?" She asks her friends, wanting to know if it's just her.
"I'm not sure what to do about it." Lucas admits quietly. "We know his secret and he knows ours. Well, he knows about me and Mason, but he's bound to figure out the rest of us. Anyway, he said he just wants to be left alone."
"Yeah, maybe we should just listen and let it go." Jerica adds with a shrug, not wanting to get into trouble over something they can easily avoid.
She's had enough on her plate recently, and she'd rather not add a cousin blackmailing her to the list.
"Since when do you back down from a fight?" Lucas scoffs in disbelief.
Jerica drops her fork onto her tray, glaring at her older brother angrily. "Since our cousin threatened to blackmail you and you're trying to egg it on! Do you want to annoy Owen and cause him to tell Mom and Dad about you two?"
"No. You're right, Jerica." Mason agrees while quickly shoving food into his mouth.
"He may be annoyed by us, but not you." Lena says slowly, confronting her best friend. "I've noticed how nice he is to you, Jerica."
"Yeah, so? It's not like he's not really nice to me, he's just not mean." She defends herself, leaning back in her seat on the bench precariously, only her fingertips on the picnic like table keeping her balanced.
"You're hardly ever nice to anyone, neither is he, and suddenly you two are friends? I'm just wondering what happened." Lena elaborates.
Jerica lets go of the table so that she is balanced in her seat once again. Moving her tray out of the way, she leans forward, resting her hands on the table.
