Chapter 15: Sources of Power
"We have many things to discuss. Can we all go our separate ways now?" Mr. Woltz questions hopefully.
No one can actually tell him what to do, but they have a feeling he's waiting to hear what Adrian wants before storming out like he usually does. It's no secret that the older vampire doesn't like anyone.
"No. Like I said, no more secrets." Lucas speaks up quickly, glancing guiltily toward Lena. He wants to talk to her and apologize, but knows that now is not the time.
"What we talk about can be discussed in front of everyone, even Vanessa and Selynn, since they're here now." The young werewolf suggests, to which everyone agrees.
"Wait, where's Monique?" Mason asks, being the only one to notice that Adrian's sister isn't present. "I haven't seen her here in a while. Even at school, she's barely around." He points out worriedly.
Adrian runs a hand through his hair and glances away from Mason as he answers reluctantly. "Yeah, the Cloud World Council has been giving her a lot of jobs lately. I think they want her to stay out of everything going on with us."
"What do you mean?" Mason asks as he crosses his arms, suspicious of the vampire's wariness.
Adrian looks at him in a way that could almost be called pity. "Look, the Council is controlling. They don't want her around, probably because they know something bad is going to happen."
"Why don't they warn us if they know the future?" Mason questions, wondering if Monique being gone is her brother's doing.
Adrian shoves his hands in his pockets uneasily, worried about how the teen will take the news. "The Council plays by their own rules, and they love playing games. Plus, they hardly ever mess with the future. They claim doing that could unsettle the universe."
Mr. Woltz is looking at him with a look that says he knows what is really being said about Monique.
"So what does that have to do with Monique? I know her, and I know she'd want to help us. And help you." Mason argues, pressing the issue so that Adrian finally snaps and tells him.
"It doesn't matter! The Council doesn't want Monique around us, or around you." The blonde vampire stares at him to show how serious he is.
Mason glances around uncertainly, as if someone might speak up for him, or say that it's a lie. "Seriously? Why would they do that?"
Adrian shrugs, not knowing what to say to the heartbroken teenager in front of him. "Like I said, the Council does what they want. Besides, Monique's family would've never let her be with a werewolf. Your kind are dangerous."
"Hold on a second." Mr. Woltz demands as he takes a step away from the wall he was leaning on. "If we're going to talk about someone dangerous, let's talk about one that's not so obvious. Like the elemental angels in the room."
He gestures first to Lena, who's sitting on the couch in between Lucas and Selynn; then to Jerica, who migrated to the kitchen at some point and is sitting at the table.
"What did I do?" Jerica asks as she reaches into a bag of trail mix to extract a handful of assorted foods.
"I haven't even electrocuted you yet." She sneers at the older vampire, wondering what she did to make him angry with her.
