I watched as Colonel Baird laid Galahad down on a makeshift bed that the Librarians had pulled out of somewhere. Ezekiel had stepped back when he saw me walk through the back door. I rushed towards him, holding his jumper in my fist. He wrapped one arm around me, supporting me so that I kept standing up. I shut my eyes, not wanting to look at the man we'd carried in. I shifted slightly, fitting firmly in the crook in his arm, he squeezed me tighter to comfort me.
We all stood in silence for a moment, Cassandra sitting at the end of the bed, while the Colonel tried to look anywhere but at us. It was like we were frozen in the moment, feeling like a photograph. I heard Cassandra shuffle a little before standing up, looking around the room without really looking at anyone.
"We'll have to get Stone back and tell him what he missed," she said, quietly so that it wasn't really directed at anyone. I could feel Ezekiel shift nervously before speaking. "I should go."
"No, that's alright, I can go get him," the Colonel said.
"No, I kind of started this, I should tell him, I mean, Eve was only here for the last part," Cassandra began to excuse herself.
"No," Ezekiel said again, "I should go. I was there for the whole thing, I mean, I was the one who took Mordred to Paris in the first place. It's because of me Jenkins did something stupid, I'll go get Stone."
I wasn't sure what to say, I didn't want Ezekiel to leave me, thinking that I wouldn't be able to stand without him, but i also agreed with what he said. He and I had started this whole thing. It wasn't fair, but Stone would trust Ezekiel more anyway. Ezekiel held onto my arm gently, getting me to look at him so he could speak to me softly. "I'm going to go get Stone okay," he whispered, "I'll be back and then I'll try to fix this thing with Jenkins." he whispered, smiling a little and making my heart flutter. "Okay," I whispered back, nodding just a little.
He let go me, making sure I could stand before he quickly walked to Cassandra. He whispered something to her, but I heard him perfectly. "Take care of her, she's very important to me. If anything happens I want you to come get me straight away and I'll fix it. She's not going to get hurt when I'm away, okay?" he whispered to her, his eyes fierce and protective, making me feel safe. Cassandra nodded knowingly and patted him on the arm.
Ezekiel looked at me, giving me his cheeky smile before pecking me on the forehead. "I'll be back soon, Colonel Baird, can you get the back door to Paris?" he asked.
"Already done," she said, standing beside the door. Ezekiel nodded giving a little hop before heading through the back door with a flash. I looked at the man on the bed for the first time since he'd been brought into the Library. Thank goodness I had Ezekiel to protect me.
