Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend

somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

**Alex's POV**

I pulled my thin shirt off, and put my sunglasses on grinning up at the sun. We stood waiting for our suitcases to be taken off the bus.

Seven buses were all parked in a line, kids piling out.

"You know that's against the dress code Ms. Wolf," said Phil, appearing in front of me. Phil was the director at Camp Bird. He was in his mid-fourties, and had worked here since he was 21.

"Oh lighten up," I told him, "It's summer."

"Oh fine," said Phil, "But no causing trouble this year." I laughed as he walked away talking to other kids. I was one of Phil's favorites, I liked to get in trouble, and sneak out, but everyone loved me. I never got into trouble,  just joked my way out of it.

Soon everyone on my bus had their luggage, on our name tags a sticker had been added. I grinned as I found that I was in the same cabin that I had been in last year. I grabbed my suitcase, and started to make my way over to my home for the next fourteen days.

"Are you in cabin 7 too," asked a girl, walking beside me. She had long bleach blond hair, and blue eyes. She looked older than me. I looked at her, trying to see if I knew here, but she was a stranger to me.

"Yup," I said.

"Awesome, my names Cayla," she told me.

"I'm Alex," I told her, "Short for Alexandria."

"That's a really pretty name," she told me.

"That's what they say," I told her laughing. She laughed too.

"Where are you from," I asked Cayla, as we got to the cabin. It was a small wooden building painted white. It had four windows, and crappy doors that didn't keep the hot air out. We had a radiator, but we weren't supposed to use it unless it got really cold at night.

"I'm from New Finard," she told me. It was a city close to my own.

"Cool," I said, tossing my suitcase on the bed closest to the door. There were 10 cots, five on each side. Cayla put her stuff on the one in front of us.

"I wonder when everyone else is going to get here," said Cayla, wondering around the empty room. There was one bed on the other side of the room that had a suitcase on it, but it also had a consular shirt on it, so I knew that it was the adult that would stay with us.

I flopped on my cot, ignoring the creaks. Soon the door was opened and another girl walked in. She looked about my age. She had short redish-brown hair in a pixie cut. She had a baby face, and looked like a goody goody child.

"Pixie," called Cayla, seeing the girl who walked it. I thought she was making fun of the girls hair, but the girl seemed to recognize Cayla right away.

"Cayla," she said, dropping her stuff on the bed next to hers, "I didn't know if we were going to be in the same cabin."

"This is awesome," said Cayla, grinning at me. Pixie finally notice me.

"Hi," she said, "I'm pixie."

"I guessed," I told her, "I'm Alex."

"Me and Pixie go to school together," said Cayla, "She's my best friend."

"Your both from New Finard," I said, "Cool."

They both nodded, starting their own conversation.

"Hey," I said. They both looked my way. "Are you guys going to the party tonight?"

"No," said Cayla, Pixie quickly repeated her answer.

"Why not," I asked, they both looked old enough to be accepted.

"I don't like to drink," said Cayla.

"It's illegal," said Pixie, her voice become insanely high, "We can't do things like that."

"Why not," I asked, shrugging.

"It's bad," said Pixie.

"Not really," I said, "You just have to be responsible. Why don't you come with me tonight?"

"No," said Pixie, but Cayla looked tempted to accept my offer.

"I don't know," said Cayla.

"It'll be fun," I told her.

"Fine," said Cayla, "I'll come."

"I'll come too," said Pixie, following Cayla's answer.

"Yeah," I said, "This'll be fun."
