Chapter Forty Eight

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills

**Alex's POV** 

We were supposed to clean and cook, stupid things like that for the competition. I was about 5 minutes in when I puked in a garbage can, and they let me out, thinking that I was sick. 

James was sweet and got me water. I was mad at him for giving me so many drinks, but I knew it was my fault. I had drunken to much, to fast without anything else. 

I groaned and sat next to James, all of the other men where up on stage with their personal slaves for the day. They were all giving different commands to show how good their slave was.

"Thanks for getting me out of this," James whispered in my ear, "I would have done bad."

"Whatever," I said, "I bet you have slaves that do whatever you want at the snap of a finger."

James laughed, "I don't even have slaves where I live. I'm not as rich as you think I am."

"Oh," I said. I expected James to be some rich kid.

"Yeah," said James, "Surprising."

"Than why are you here," I asked him. He was taken off guard momentarily. 

"I," he started, thinking, "Why do you think?"

He was stalling, but I thought about it a second.

"No idea," I said.

"Really,"asked James, "You're a smart girl, you can figure it out."

I thought about if for the next hour, and he didn't say anything.

"I have two theories," I whispered, when we were back on the bus, and I was feeling better.

"And what are those," asked James grinning.

"You're working for the King," I started. James' smile grew.

"Or," I said, "You work with Jace."

James' smile diminished. 

"I'm right, aren't I," I asked.

"Didn't think that you'd guess that," he answered, "I guess you could say I work with him."

"I wish you could take me back with you," I said.

"Not yet."
