"Girls, come to the dining room!" Chris yells from the lower level. Leah and I set down the dolls we were playing with and run downstairs. We go over to the table where Chris is setting down some paints. We sit down at the table and Chris moves a piece of paper in front of us.
"Alright girls, you guys are going to make Mommy a birthday gift." Chris explains. "Amelia, your's is going to be different from Leah's and we have about two hours to do all of this before she comes home." Chris folds Leah's paper in half. He already has a heart cut out. He glues it near the top and pours paint in a palette. He grabs a paint brush and starts painting pink paint on Leah's feet.
...
"All done." Chris says as I place my last hand print on my paper.
"Yeah!" I say throwing my paint covered hands in the air. Leah comes running into the room.
"Are you done?" Leah asks, with a smile plastered on her face. I nod and look at my picture.
Chris thought is was perfect for me to make for mom. I can't read yet but Chris read it to me. He thinks Mommy will love it. I look over to Leah's project.
Her's is different just like Chris said it would be. Chris looks over to the clock before turning back to me and quickly rushing me to the sink. He helps me wash off all the paint before explaining the next surprise we're doing for Mom.
"Okay, I was thinking we would make Mom a fancy dinner. How's that sound?" Chris asks with a glimpse of excitement in his eyes. Leah and I look at each other before nodding excitedly.
"Great! I'm going to make her favorite meal and lay rose petals in the foyer leading to the dining room. When she follows the roses, you and Leah will be there and 'serve' her. I'm going to have pre-made dishes layer on the counter for you two to grab. You will carefully bring them to her and that's where I walk in. Also, I have matching dresses for you two to wear." Chris explains. Chris rushes us upstairs to change so he can get started on the food. He grabs two identical dresses from try closet and lays them on my bed.
He helps Leah and I get into them before going back into my closet and grabbing black flats for us to wear. We put them on and Chris runs downstairs to start cooking. We walk downstairs and wait in the living room while Chris begins cooking Mom's dinner.
...
"She's here." I say, peeking through the curtains.
"Alright, everyone get into position." Chris says. Leah and I run into the dining room and wait by the door way. We hear the door open and mom walk in, her heels clicking against the floor.
"Chris, Amy, Leah, I'm home." Mom says, probably hanging up her coat. "Hello?" She calls against. We can hear her walking closer and closer to the dining room, more than likely following the path we made her. Once we decide she's close enough, Leah and I walk in the doorway.
"Good evening Mommy. Please come with us so we can get you seated." I say. Mom chuckles before following us into the dining room. We lead her to the end of the table and Leah pulls out the chair. She sits down and Leah and I go into the kitchen to get her meal. We carefully bring it over to her as she stared in awe.
"Bon Appétit." I say. Chris taught me how to say that just before Mom got home. He said it would add a fancy feeling to tonight.
"Well thank you Miss Amelia and Miss Leah. This looks amazing." Mommy says, grabbing her fork. Chris walks down the stairs and Mom looks at him with a look of excitement. He calls us over and hands us our gifts. We walk back over to mom, gifts in hand, and she peers down at us.
"Here you go, Mommy." I say, handing my to her. She grabs it from me and starts reading it. As soon as she finishes, her eyes are filled with tears.
"Thank you baby. This was amazing!" She says, pulling me into a hug. Leah walks up to her nervously and hands Mom her gift. Mom awes over how cute the cover is before opening the card. She reads it out loud for all of us to hear.
Dear Mom,
These past weeks have been a mixture of chaos and adventure. I've had so much fun. From the game nights to the alpaca at the zoo licking my hand, everything so far has been amazing. Thank you so much for the amazing sacrifice you have made. I hope you have a birthday as wonderful as you are.❤️❤️
Love,
LeahMom finishes the letter and turns to Leah. She ushers her into a hug and kisses the top of her head.
"Leah, it has been an honor to be your mom." Mom says, wiping another tear that had escaped her eye.
