"Hello, I'm Dr. Gallows." Dr. Gallows reaches to shake Chris's hand. Melissa sits up and is ready to hear about the information she's been dying to hear.
"So, what's wrong?" Melissa asks impatiently.
"The intense bleeding and pain you were feeling were caused by a miscarriage." Dr. Gallows explains, his voice monotone. Melissa and Chris look at each other shocked.
"Excuse me?" Melissa asks, turning back to the doctor.
"You see Melissa, you weren't very far along so it would've been difficult to know." Dr. Gallows says softly.
"How far along do you think I was?" Melissa asks, feeling the all to familiar feeling.
"Around five weeks."
...
"What do you want for dinner, Amelia?" Julie asks. Amelia looks at the floor and shrugs. Amelia has said barely anything since she left. Julie felt bad for her but wanted Amelia feel welcome. She'd been suggesting they do things together like playing games or read a book. Amelia, though, wasn't interested.
"How about chicken nuggets? Is that good?" Julie asks, hopeful. Amelia glances up and nods. She goes back into the living room and sits on the couch. She turns on the tv only to see her mother's face plastered on the large screen. Amelia smiles to herself, remembering all their fun moments.
"Hey, lets change the channel." Julie says, looking at the tv.
"No!" Amelia yells, startling herself. Julie takes a step back in surprise. She definitely wasn't expecting that kind of reaction.
"Alright, we can watch it." Julie says, sitting down. The Melissa on the screen started crying and Amelia immediately saddened. She hated seeing her mom upset, and seeing it on tv, knowing she couldn't do anything about it, was tearing her apart.
"You miss her don't you?" Julie asks. Amelia nods, not taking her eyes off the tv.
"I wish I could see her again." Amelia says, fighting the tears threatening to fall.
"I know sweetheart." Julie says, setting a hand on Amelia's knee.
...
"Hey mom. What's wrong? Is Amy okay?" Melissa asks her mother right as she answers the phone.
"Everything's fine. Amelia just wanted to say hi." Julie tells her daughter. "Are you alright? You sound sad."
"Yeah, I'm fine." Melissa says, not letting herself think about the previous events.
"Hi mommy!" Amelia says through the phone. In an instant, Melissa's mood improves. Just the light tone of her child's voice sends happiness throughout her body, something she'd been lacking.
"Hey baby girl. I miss you." Melissa says into the phone.
"I miss you too. When can I come home?" Amelia asks.
"Don't you like it at Grandma's?" Melissa asks.
"I do, I just like it by you more." Amelia says. Even though Melissa couldn't see it, she knew Amelia was flashing, what she called it, one of her award winning smiles.
"I like it when you're here too. How is it at Grandma's?" Melissa asks, changing the subjects.
"Good, she's making chicken nuggets." Amelia states.
"Your favorite." Melissa says, smiling.
"Yeah, I didn't know she knew that." Amelia says.
"A little birdie must've told her." Melissa says, smiling at her daughter's innocence. "I have to go give your sister a bath. I love you sweetheart." Melissa says.
"I love you too mommy." Amelia says. Melissa hangs up the phone and throws it on the couch. She whiles the few tears that managed to escape and slowly makes her way up to Leah's room. She slowly opens her door to see Chris cradling a sleeping Leah in his arms. Melissa smiles at the sight and slowly walks towards them.
"Hey." She says softly.
"Hey, you should be resting." Chris says, surprised to see his girlfriend out of bed. 'He's obviously been oblivious to the past hour' Melissa thought.
"I know, but I wanted to get out of bed and move around." Melissa replies.
"I already gave Leah her bath so she's ready for bed." Chris says.
"I'll just go back to bed then." Melissa says turning and heading towards the door.
"Hey." Chris calls out softly. Melissa turns around to face him. "I love you." He says.
"I love you too." Melissa replied before heading out the door.
