Chapter Nine
Mac's POV
"What do the different colored strings mean?" I heard Lydia ask. I was currently laying in my room, trying desperately to get some sleep before I had to go to this stupid training.
"Oh, just different stages of the investigation. So green is solved, yellow is to be determined, blue's just pretty." I heard Stiles respond. I couldn't sleep though. I couldn't help but listen. Eavesdrop on the conversation going on in the next room. They were both here when I arrived and I tried to just ignore them and sleep. It didn't work. My mind ran wild.
"What does red mean?" I heard her ask.
"Unsolved." Stiles responded. 100% of his board was covered in red strings. I've sat up and stared at it with him multiple times. Trying to help him solve something.
"You only have red on the board." Lydia pointed out, making me roll my eyes.
"Yes, I'm aware. Thank you." Stiles said sarcastically which made me smile slightly.
"Did you get detention for pulling the alarm?" She asked quietly. I knew I shouldn't but I couldn't help myself. I snuck quietly into the hallway and peeked into the door.
"Yep. Every day this week. It's okay, though. We were onto something." He said, turning to her.
"Even though we couldn't find any proof of Barrow being there?" Lydia asked quietly, playing with some of the red yarn Stiles had in his bed. She was laying down on her stomach, staring off at the wall.
"Hey, Lydia." Stiles said, kneeling in front of her. "You've been right every time something like this has happened, okay? So don't start doubting yourself now."
"No scent. No bomb. And I got you in trouble." Lydia said.
"Okay, look. Barrow was there. All right?" Stiles said, grabbing her hands and untwisting the yarn. I felt a pang of jealousy. I also felt like I was intruding on an intimate moment. I moved away from the door, and closed my eyes they stung red as tears filled them. It's Lydia, it always has been and it always will be. "You knew it. You felt it. Okay? And look, if you wanted to, I'd go back to that school right now and search all night just to prove it. Get up. Get up now. We're going to the school."
I quickly ran back into my room before Stiles or Lydia could see me. They ran past my room and headed outside. I leaned against the door and slid down to the floor. He used me? He couldn't get Lydia, so for one night he decided to use me. I felt disgusted, like dirt.
My phone dinged, grabbing my attention. I pulled myself off the floor to see a text from Helena. Of all the times, she decides to text me as I'm feeling sorry for myself. I just wanted time to sulk.
'Meet me by The Nemeton in 5.'
The message said. I thought I wasn't supposed to meet up with her till later. How the hell did she even get my number? Now that I'm thinking about it, how did Jennifer? I decided not to respond and got up. I quickly wiped my eyes, grabbed my jacket, and headed out the house.
Arriving at the trunk, I felt a pang of fear. I almost died here. I hadn't been back since we saved the parents. It's also the last place I saw Derek. That thought filled me with sadness. I miss Derek, not only as the guy I fell in love with but he was my best friend once upon a time. My only friend. I missed him. I wish he was around. I hope he's safe wherever he is right now.
"This is where I first saw you. Your powers drew my to this spot." A voice sounded, and my aunt Helena stepped out of the treeline. I turned to her, with a slight glare. "It's also where I saw that you weren't in control."
"How did you know?" I asked her.
"I could feel it. Phoenix's are all connected. Especially from the same bloodline. We all have the same supernatural gene in our blood. When it's activated, we can feel the flame in each other. Yours is one of strongest I've ever felt but it's out of control." Helena explained, walking toward me.
"Wait, what do you mean we all have the gene and how does it activate?" I asked confused, "And why do you know all of this?"
"It's in our blood. Our ancestors were Phoenix and your children will be too. I learned this all from the elders of our bloodline. After I discovered I was adopted, I traveled to Greece and met my maternal grandparents. They explained it all and taught me control. As I shall do with you." She said.
"I still don't know what you mean by activated." I said.
"Phoenix are creatures of emotion. We are creatures of anger and sadness. Tragic events have been known to activate our gene. Mine activated when I was about 27, my adoptive parents were in a car crash and my father died instantly. My mother was in a coma for a while. She ended up being fine, but it was touch and go for a while."
"I'm sorry to hear that." I responded, not knowing what else to say.
"When did you first feel a change, of such anger and sadness that you thought you would explode?" She asked.
"When my mother tried to kill me." I responded. "That night, I thought I was going to die and I was so angry and the world. At my mother, at myself, at my father, and everyone I had ever known."
"That was the starting of your Phoenix life. Have you noticed, when the worst things happen, the stronger your flame gets?" She asked and I thought back to the tragic events in my life. When I was shot, When I thought Derek had died, when I found out that he was with Jennifer.
How come I didn't know about being supernatural until months after that night? I didn't know until I couldn't pass over mountain ash." I asked.
"It can be a slow process." Helena simply said. I thought back. Did any other signs show before I was actually a Phoenix? I thought about back to when I first moved here. A headache so bad I basically passed out for a few hours. Maybe that was supernatural.
"To control your inner fire. You need control of your emotions. Much like the werewolves you surround yourself with, our powers are controlled by our anger. Unlike them, our sadness as well." Helena said. I was going to respond when my phone rang, it was Stiles. I ignored it but it rang again.
"Mac, do you know where Scott is?" Stiles asked from the other line.
"Having Dinner at Kira's, why?" I asked confused.
"Barrow is after Kira." Stiles said and I froze. Kira? Little innocent, almost get eaten by a coyote, Kira? I said not another word to Helena as I rushed to my car. I hope Scott was okay. I hope we could get there in enough time to stop Barrow.

Okay, I feel like it's slightly shitty, especially the Phoenix part. I couldn't put my thoughts into words like I wanted too. Hopefully some of y'all like it.
