Later that evening when Bernice went to meet Scott, someone

saw her crossing the Payne's corn field; Bernice thought she was

being clever but not clever enough. Bernice was seen by, Joseph

Pearly, a busy-body old man that stays in everybody business, with

a negative frame of mine, who neglect his own house to be in

someone else life.

"Lewis Payne, I saw a little Negro girl crossing your cornfield."

"When, and what time did you see someone crossing my cornfield?"

"Oh it was about an hour ago, we need to teach those Negros they need to learn some obedience about how to stay in their place."

"Scott is out there, he'll chase her away."

"Lewis you need to be a little more attentive to your fields and not let anyone in them unless you say so because they might be stealing from you."

"Joseph Pearly," Lewis spoke, in a very angry voice. "Let me be, I'm busy now. So please don't bother me with simple things. I need to concentrate on my worker's pay, for working in my cornfields."

When Bernice cross the fields of the long tall corn stocks, at first

Scott could not see her, and then the front of her wide flair skirt

became into sight slowly; Bernice walked up to Scott, grabbed and

hugged him. She then placed a kiss on his lips, hoping Scott would

change his mind about not seeing her anymore.

"Now, Scott Payne, what is all this talk about not seeing me?"

"No baby, just slow things down a little, until I can get my folks off my back, besides my Mom said something about hanging a little Negro girl."

"Find, this relationship is history anyway."

"Come on now babe, you know that's not me talking, you know I don't want anything to happen to you, because of me."

Without a sound, Bernice's eyes flowed abundantly with tears, she

began to pull away. Not wanting to leave things as they were, her

heart just wouldn't let her stay to work things out, but still without

even trying the relationship grew stronger. Thanksgiving passed

and Christmas was near, as the two lovebirds were busy hiding

their love for one another.

Scott felt his parents would soon figure out what was going on

between the two of them, but little did Scott know, his parents had

other things on their mind. Scott family had too much on their

plate to worry about Scott. You see Scott brother was in the

Navy and he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, after all, Scott was home

safe. So they thought Scott was close enough for his parents to

keep an eye on him.

It was a cold Sunday morning, the morning of December 7, 1941

as the sunrise, a bright bluish-yellow light shined in on

Scott room, from the faint blue and yellow curtain that hung over

his window. Scott's eyes began to catch a glimpse of sunlight
