It's a cold August day, there's fresh snow on the ground. I jump out of my car and rush up to the house. This is my new house, I just moved to Virginia from California.
It is completely empty on inside, and completely foreign to me. After living in the same house for years I'm nervous about this one. I'll be 14 in a couple of months, and in 3 weeks I'll be starting the eighth grade.
I run back outside to grab my diary from the car when I see a girl staring at me from across the street. I find I weird so I run up to her. Close up I see that she's really pretty, she has shoulder length blonde hair and blue eyes.
"Hey, I was just wondering why you were staring at me." I say politely. She gives me a once over then smiles. "It's just rare for new comers in Morgans. This is a very small town." She says.
"My name is Abbi, Abbi Carson." I say with a smile. "I'm Scarlett, Scarlett Davison." She says. We talk for a little while and I have the weirdest feeling that I've known her forever.
A week later she invites me to her house to go swimming, even though it is 30 degrees outside. We go out back and I look wearily at the pool.
"What's wrong?" Scarlett asks. "I-I can't swim..." I say quietly. "What?! I learned to swim when I was five." Scarlett says astonished. "I never had the chance to. My mom was always busy with work, so I never had the time to learn." I tell her.
"Well then there's only one answer." Scarlett says happily. "What?" I asks. "I'm gonna teach you how to swim. So get your butt over here and into the pool." She says.
I walk in until the water is up to my shoulders. "It's freezing!" I say as my teeth chatter. "You'll get used to it. Now come out further." She says. "But if I do I'll be to short to walk." I say.
So she swims over to me and pulls me out towards the deep end more, I give a small yelp and flap my arms as I try not to sink.
"Calm down Abbs, I've got you." She says as he laughs. "Abbs?" I ask surprised. "Yeah, I think it suites you." She says as she smiles. "Why? Because I have an amazing six pack?" I ask trying to look macho, even though I was scared for my life.
"I don't think you're there yet. But if you want to believe that go right ahead." She says. I think it's funny how I was so comfortable around her so quickly, and she was the same with me. It's as if we had been friends for years.
"We'll start with something easy. Try the doggie paddle." She says. Before I have time to ask what that is she let's go of me. I immediately start to sink, in a state of fear I flap my arms out infront of me and manage to not drown.
"Good! Now just kick your feet and you'll be good." She says happily. I kick my feet back forth, finding it surprisingly easy to stay up.
Scarlett and I where inseparable after that. For the next two weeks we did everything together.
Then school started. I was nervous and everyone gave me weird looks, I was the talk of school. I guess it was weird for new people in this town. Luckily Scarlett and I had the same homeroom, so we sat together and talked. In the middle of our conversation two girls walked over.
"Abbi, this Meredith" Scarlett says pointing towards a girl blonde haired girl, "and this is Haley" She says pointing toward a black haired girl.
"Hello, I'm Abbi. It's nice to meet you." I say. "Meredith and I have been friends since 6th grade and Haley and I became friends last year." Scarlett says.
The two just stared at me the whole time, when homeroom was over we went our separate ways. I had a class with Haley and another with Meredith, but they just hung out with their friends. At the end of the day I was heading outside when Haley came up to me.
"Hey." She says. "Hey." I say back. "Sorry about not talking to you today, I was just shocked about there being a new person in town." She says. "It's ok. Everyone else did the same thing." I tell her. "
Well I think we should hang out some time." She says. "Yeah me too." I say cheerfully. "Are you headed anywhere? Because I'm going down the street to Sammie's, and I'd love it if you could come." She says. "I was just going to walk home, my mom doesn't get home for a couple of hours, so I'd love to go to Sammie's." I tell her.
When we get there we take a seat in the back. "So, where are you from?" She asks. "California." I tell her. "California?! Are you serious?!" She asks loudly. "Yeah, but it's not as amazing as people think. It's crowded and noisy, especially since I lived in the city. Have you lived here your whole life?" I ask.
"No, I actually move here when I was 10. My grandparents lived here, so my parents sent me to live here. It was either that or boarding school." She says. I could see hurt in her eyes as she talked about her parents.
"Why'd they ship you off?" I ask. "They were never really good parents. Always off working or doing something else, so I'd do anything to get there attention. I go in a fight with a kid at school, my parents were outraged. So they said I could either go to boarding school or move in with my grandparents, whom I had never met." She says. "I'm sorry. My mom was always working, but she spent all her free time with me." I tell her.
"What about your dad?" She asks. For some reason my mind goes blank when I think of him. What happened to him? I couldn't remember why he was gone. "I'm not sure, I think he just took off." I say.
We talk for a while longer, then she says she has to go. "It was great hanging out with you. I'll see you later." She says with a smile. "You too, I'll see you at school tomorrow." I say.
With that she walks out the door. I get up and head home. I get lost on the way and end up at a playground. Since I had nothing better to do I go over and sit on one if the swings. It was actually quite relaxing. After a while someone else came up and sat on the one next to me. I look up and realize it's the Meredith girl from earlier.
"Hey." I say getting her attention. "Hey." She says quietly, I quickly realize she's really shy. "I'm Abbi." I say, although she already knows this. "I know. I'm Meredith." She says with a smile.
We sit there in silence before she speaks up. "What's it like? Outside of this town? I've lived here my whole life and all I want is to escape." She says. "Its fun. I don't know how to compare it to this town because I haven't been here long, but I can tell you that the world outside of this town is really fun." I said.
"I can't wait to leave. My dream is to travel the world! I wanna go to Europe!" She says loudly. "Me too!" I say excitedly. "Maybe we should go together? It'd be fun, especially since we're friends and all." She says as she winks at me. I get over my shock of her being more open, when she was shy a second ago, then I respond. "Definitely." I say with a smile.
I jolt up and look around. I'm confused for a second, but then I realize I'm on my couch sitting next to Pat. My dream had felt so real, as if I'd actually been there again.
I smile as I remember meeting my friends, and I laugh remembering all the things we've done together. I can't believe it's been five years since I first moved here, it's gone by so fast.
As I wonder why I dreamt about them I realize something. Even though I've been a pain on the ass, even though I've been weird, and even though I've been highly annoying, my friends have been there by my side the whole time. Today was just one example of that.
I lay back down next to Pat, and as I drift off again I think about how lucky I am to have such great friends.
I don't ever want to lose them.
