Sally paced around, waiting and thinking of some reason to leave Pearl's side.
They were playing checkers, and also throwing balloons at each other. After losing to Pearl, Amethyst got soaked by Steven's water balloons.
"Ah, it feels good to lose." Amethyst said laying down.
"I hope that's not the tone you have during battle." Pearl said standing up.
"Gah, you're no fun anymore. This is why we never form Opal." Amethyst said standing up. Sally started listening closely, wondering who or what Opal was.
"We don't form Opal because you're difficult and a mess!" Pearl yelled.
"No, we don't form Opal because you're up tight and--" Steven interrupted Amethyst.
"What's Opal?" He asked. Sally joined the gems.
"Oh, it's the two of us, mashed together." Amethyst said.
"Pfft, is water just hydrogen and oxygen 'mashed together'?" Pearl asked placing her hands on her hips.
Amethyst and Steven stared at her, while Sally knew the answer, but said nothing because she feared Amethyst would nickname her 'Nerd'.
"Analogy wasted." Pearl sighed. "Look here." She bent over and shaped the sand into her and Amethyst's form. "When we synchronize our form, we can combine into a powerful fusion gem named Opal." The sand Pearl and Amethyst danced, and combined to make an even bigger gem.
"Fusion?" Sally cocked her head.
"I do not dance like that!" Amethyst said crushing the gem.
"Amethyst!" Pearl growled.
"Wow! That's so cool! Tell me more!" Steven said. Sally just smiled a little a walked away.
"Sally, where are you going?" Pearl asked.
"Just inside." Sally said walking towards the stairs of the temple. She ran up them and into the temple.
"Hello, Sally." Garnet said. She looked behind her, searching for Pearl. "I see you got away from Pearl."
"Yeah, she was down there talking about some gem named Opal." Sally said.
"Their fusion? Why were they talking about her?" Garnet asked.
"It just got brought up." Sally shrugged.
"Did you know that you can fuse?" Garnet asked smiling.
"I... Can?" Sally asked, still pretty confused on the subject. Garnet chuckled.
"Would you like me to show you fusion?" She asked. Sally was pretty taken aback by the question. She had just learned that fusion existed, and she was already being asked to fuse. And she barely knew how to be a gem, even after years of practice. She couldn't even summon a weopon yet!
"Um... I think I'm fine... Thanks, though..." Sally said walking over to the sofa and sitting down.
"Okay..." Garnet laughed softly.
It seemed as if Garnet was trying her best to warm up to Sally, but she was holding something back. And Sally couldn't tell what.
She breathed in heavily, ready to say something to Garnet that could just make her mad, when Pearl, Amethyst and Steven walked.
"Did your mission go well?" Pearl asked.
"I've located the geode beatles of Heaven and Earth. We'll need to split up." Garnet said.
"Good! Because I don't want to go with Pearl!" Amethyst said.
"And I don't want to go with grammatically incorrect people." Pearl frowned.
