Saytee
I expected Jim would be back soon. For now, I did just wander the streets, bored really.
I received plenty of looks and questions about where I was from and all. Too bad I really had no good stories to tell them. I'm pretty sick of the attention.
The market is, so far, my favorite part about the island. All down one street, candles burned from tall lamp posts, making it seem rather bright out under the starry sky. And crammed along the edges was all sorts of little stands, selling all kinds of things.
Of course I had no money, but it was nice to just be there. As I walked along, politely declining any advertisements, I started to hear music. And sure enough, at the end of the street was a group of foreign looking aliens playing foreign looking instruments.
Nonetheless, the music was beautiful and very enthusiastic. I was even asked to dance by a total stranger as I listened in. Of course, I had to accept.
The music was fast pace, and so was the dance. The steps were fairly easy to follow. Soon more people around us danced too, and at the end when the music ended, everyone shouted, "Chede!" Which I later found out meant "dance."
That was the most fun is had in forever! I blew kisses to everyone as I started down the street again. At the end of the road, an old, lizard like creature sat at a table with a crystal ball. I couldn't help but stare as I walked past.
"You have no money, that is alright." She informed me. I stopped, curious now. This lady wasn't scary looking, like you'd expect every fortune teller. She actually seemed sane.
The woman held her (to my surprise) clawless hand out, motioning me to give her my hand. I walked to the table and sat on the opposite side. She smiled, still holding her hands out, and I gave her mine.
She examined my palm. "Oh, someone has a shady past, don't we?" She asked, glancing up at my face for a moment. She started drawing figure eights with her fingers as she looked down again. "Oh well, the past does not matter, right, dear? It's the future that everyone wants to know." She said with a slight giggle at the end.
She was quiet for a moment, and when she spoke up, it made me jump. "Oh!" She shouted, letting go of my hand. I stared at her, confused. She cupped her ear, and she seemed like she was in a trance or something.
She said, "I hear wedding bells!" Then she switched ears. "And I baby cry!" She suddenly got serious and put her finger to her lips. "Oh, shhh....there's a voice...who...?"
I was starting to get excited now. I was on the edge of my seat, my eyes wide with hope. The fortune teller's cheerful expression faded. "I'm afraid..." She paused and covered her eyes, as if to hide from the image. "All I see is a cyborg and a bag of money...." She said sadly.
I stood up, knowing exactly what kind of situation she was talking about. Slave trade, nothing unfamiliar to me. I backed away and ran to look for Jim. I didn't know if that was true, but what she guessed about my past was right, why wouldn't this be, too?
I looked back to make sure nobody was following me. And sure enough, I ran into who I wanted to see. Literally, ran into.
I stumbled, and Jim caught me. "Wha-Saytee.." He said with surprise. I looked up and smiled sheepishly, then looked to the side at the cyborg in charge, who he was apparently walking with. "Oh, I shall give you two some time. Good day Mr.Hawkins, and...eh, friend." He said awkwardly, then hobbled away on his crutch.
Jim lifted me to my feet. "Are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." He said concernedly. I considered telling him about the fortune teller, but I quickly decided against it and shook my head. "Oh, I'm alright. Just trying to take in all these sights..." I lied.
Jim smiled and took my hand. "Well there's a more fun way to do that. Come on," he exclaimed and tugged me toward the ship again.
Once we were there, he went below where the small lifeboat and his solar surfer were kept. I watched with my hands on my hips as he pulled the surfer out.
"What are you doing, the sun doesn't reach out here." I reminded him. That's when he took a chain off his neck. It wasn't until now that I saw the jewel of it.
Well...sort of a jewel.
It was a bright ball of light, and I watched as he tied it to the rails of the surfer, then motioned for me to come over.
"What is that?" I questioned, still complying. I stood on the side of the surfer, and stood behind me, cradling me. "You'll see..." He answered mysteriously.
Suddenly he opened the little light jewel, and rays of light shot out. The sails instantly started drinking in the rays, and we started rising off the ground.
What kind of alien voodoo was this? I raised my eyes as I looked down, and Jim pushed off the deck, and we went falling into the stars. I choked on a scream as I closed my eyes and held onto the rail tighter.
I felt Jim's hand on mine, and my hair flying back, and I hesitantly opened my eyes again. Hey! We didn't fall! I smiled brightly as I looked down on the island.
After a minute of just laughing because I was so happy we were up here, I looked back at Jim, who'd apparently been watching me the whole time.
I blushed and leaned my head on his shoulder, and we finally really kissed for the first time. Needless to say,I forgot about that lousy fortune teller for a while...
