Chapter 21
He revved the engine and pulled away from the curb sharply. I immediately regretted my decision. This definitely wasn’t safe. “So, why are you walking home?” He asked. “I thought you and Cameron were hanging out.”
“Well, we were. But we were also with the rest of your all’s gang of friends, and I’m just too tired and wasn’t up for it so I left.”
He nodded in understanding. “So do you want to go do something?”
I was very surprised by his question, and I was even more surprised by my response, “Might as well, I’ve already missed prime napping time anyway.”
“Do you want to come over and go in the pool? I might as well use it while I got it.” I instantly became very anxious picturing me in a bikini in front of Taylor.
I pushed the nervous feelings down as much as I could. He wasn’t my boyfriend and I didn’t have to impress him. We had hooked up a few times here and there but that didn’t count. “Yeah sure, we just need to stop by my house real quick so I can change.”
We pulled up into my driveway and I told him to wait in the car while I ran in and changed. I threw on the first bathing suit I could find and told myself over and over again that it didn’t matter how I looked. I almost believed. I threw a t-shirt and shorts on over my bathing suit and went back out to Taylor’s car.
As soon as I opened the door Taylor groaned and said “Thank God. I could actually feel myself aging just sitting here waiting for you.”
I rolled my eyes and got in the car, “Calm down, I was barely gone five minutes.”
When we got to Taylor’s house my jaw almost hit the floor. I was stunned at how big it was. “Don’t be too impressed,” he said, “it won’t be mine anymore in two weeks.”
“What the hell are you going to do?” I asked. I was really worried about him. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the abandonment and rejection he must have felt.
We got out of the car and he just shrugged, “Who knows, I’m just gonna play it by ear.”
He held the door open for me as I walked inside of his house. It was even bigger inside than I thought. Of course that was probably largely due to the fact that it was almost completely empty. There was no furniture, no real signs of life beside a few of Taylor’s things thrown around. It was cold and empty. This wasn’t a home.
He pointed to a door in the back, “The pools out through their. I’m just going to change real quick and then meet you out there.”
“What about your cast?”
He looked down at it puzzled. “I’ll just wrap it up in plastic bags? That should keep it dry right?” He looked up at me as if I was supposed to have the answer. There was something about his eyes that just sucked me in and made me want to know what he was thinking when he was looking at me.
“Well, I guess were going to find out. You should grab some tape to, to help secure the bag.”
He nodded and then ran off upstairs. I walked out the back door and into his backyard. Not surprisingly, it was also huge. I just couldn’t understand how his parents could just ditch him like they did. I mean sure he was a pain in the ass, but no one deserved this.
I took off my shirt and my shorts and awkwardly stood around waiting for Taylor to come back out. My phone went off with a text from Cameron asking if I made it home okay. I texted him a quick yes and turned my phone off.
I heard the back door open and turned around to see Taylor walking outside. He stopped for a second and just started at me. I immediately grew very uncomfortable, “What? Is there like a giant bug on me?”
He shook his head. “No, no, no, no…” He walked over to me and handed me the bag and tape. “Okay, I need some help with this.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?! Did you just ask for help? Did Taylor Caniff just ask for help? I don’t believe my eyes!”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don’t’ flatter yourself, it’s just hard to hold the bag in place and tape it at the same time.”
He stuck his arm out and I managed to create some sort of contraption that looked like it might be water proof. “Let’s hope it works,” I said as I stuck the last piece of tap on his arm.
He immediately looked up at me with a twinkle in his eyes that I knew meant nothing good. I started stepping backwards “Taylor, don’t. Don’t do it. Taylor stop right there.” A lopsided grin spread across his face as he continued to advance towards me. “TAYLOR!” I shrieked as he wrapped his one arm around my waist and dragged me towards the pool, throwing us in together.
