Chapter 13

Brock

Pewter City-

It was noon. Red didn't know which Pokémon that he'd use. He looked again at the type advantage chart on his Pokedex. Apparently, most Rock-type Pokémon in Kanto were also part Ground-type, and according to the Pokedex, electric-types like Pikachu's electric attacks would have no effect against ground types.

He thought it over. He knew he'd use Squirtle, it was his best Pokémon. He finally decided to choose Pikachu instead of Pidgey, given the fact that Pidgey was knocked out with one throw from the Geodude the previous day.

"So, Red," said Blue. They were still at the Pokémon Center. "Are you ready to leave?"

"Yeah," he said. "Let's do this."

They walked again towards the Gym. Pewter City wasn't necessarily that large, but the many winding paths through the rugged terrain made it feel longer than it really was. Many other people seemed to be heading towards the Gym too.

"Do you think all of these people are going to battle Brock?" Red asked.

"I don't think so," said Blue. "I think they're going to watch. Gym Leaders are like local celebrities and whenever they get to battle, it's a public spectacle. It's like cheering for your hometown sports team."

Red was beginning to lose his nerve. "Let's hope I'm not a public laughing stock then."

They arrived at the Gym, and saw a large line out the front door of the giant rock. They spotted Joey, who beckoned them over.

"Official Gym Challengers are to come with me," he said. He led them over about a football field away, and they entered what looked like an irrelevant rock, that looked rather like a telephone booth in shape and size. Joey opened a cleverly disguised door and they entered. Once inside the rock, Red and Blue realized that it was an elevator. The elevator took them down, and opened. Inside was a small waiting room with magazines and a couple couches. On one wall of the room was a window that viewed the battlefield from an angle. Red could see that people were beginning to file into the stadium and it was filling up rapidly.

"There sure are a lot of people," said Blue.

"They're here to cheer on Brock and show their support," said Joey. "A few days ago, Brock lost. Funny thing, it was another trainer from Pallet Town. Anyways, I've got to go to the broadcast booth, I've gotta be the announcer for this."

Joey left up the elevator. Another hour passed by. Suddenly, the lights in the stadium darkened. Joey's voice came over an unseen intercom. "How are you doing Pewter City?" His question was met with a deafening roar, intensified by the sound echoing off of the rock in the building. "Please put your hands together for the Rock-Hard Pokémon Trainer, the Protector of Pewter City, and your very own Gym Leader: Brock!" Sparks flew from the far end of the stadium, and the citizens of Pewter City stomped their feet in the stands to create a rumbling that sounded like the sound of boulders falling from a mountaintop. Suddenly Brock stood where the smoke cleared and waved to all sides of the Stadium.

At this time, an unseen door opened in the waiting room, and Red assumed that it was his time to enter the battlefield. As he strode through the tunnel that ran under the stands, he heard the sounds of many stomping feet. He felt as if it would collapse on him as he walked through it. He heard Joey's voice again. "And give a warm welcome to our challenger from Pallet Town! He's won a whopping zero Gym Badges! I give you Red!" Red was infuriated at Joey's sarcasm and clever insult. My zero badges were enough to beat you, Joey! He thought.
