Chapter 24

The S.S. Anne Tournament

SS. Anne, Vermillion City-

Blue descended down the dark staircase. She didn't look back at Red or Green, she wanted to prove them wrong. Sure, the boys had badges, but they didn't really know what her Pokémon were capable of. Blue battled on the streets from a young age, she could handle herself. She didn't need badges to feel good about herself.

The stairs at first went straight down. Then they started turning left and right and twisting this way and that in odd circles. The tunnels didn't go in straight lines, and they crisscrossed above and below each other so as to mix up the matches. Eventually, the stairs opened into a rectangular room with white walls and a white shiny floor. It was about fifty feet long and thirty feet wide. Across from the staircase she descended, there was another staircase and she didn't have to wait long for another trainer to appear.

Along came another female trainer. She looked like she was dressed for a cruise. She had beach blonde hair and a super orange tan. "Let's skip the chatter," she said. "I've got a day at the spa to win. Go, Pikachu!" This Pikachu was obviously female. It had a flower-band on her left ear. Blue had seen how Pikachu fought, and she sighed in relief. Blue was worried about coming face to face with Pokémon she'd never seen before.

"Go, Bulbasaur!" she said. Bulbasaur appeared from her Pokémon with its cry. It was truly a fierce battle. Though Bulbasaur and Pikachu were both small, the room soon proved cramping space for the two Pokémon. The Pikachu tried electric attacks against the Grass Pokémon, but they had little effect. Blue's 'dex said that electric attacks had little effect against Grass Pokémon. However, Pikachu was too fast for Bulbasaur. Blue ordered a Leech Seed, and after a couple of attempts, the seeds made contact with Pikachu and the vines that came out bound Pikachu so that it couldn't move. A Vine Whip attack threw the helpless mouse around the room and into walls. The rumbling sound could be heard in the other trainer's battle rooms.

Blue won the one on one match and as she recalled Bulbasaur, one of the blank walls opened up into a hidden elevator. Tournament officials had been monitoring the battles and opened the elevator when they saw that a victor had been won. Blue and the other trainer shook hands and she proceeded into the elevator.

The elevator took her up to the next level and it opened into seemingly the same battle room. Already another trainer awaited her. The first level consisted of sixteen trainers, so she figured this next level would consist of the eight remaining trainers. This next trainer was a woman who was one of those who was well dressed. Blue recognized her as one of those older more experienced trainers in the party previously.

The woman sent out a tiny sea-horse Pokémon. It was blue with a long snout. Blue analyzed it with her Pokedex: Horsea, a Water-type Pokémon. Blue wished that she had saved Bulbasaur, for Grass-Pokémon had an advantage against Water-types. Per tournament rules, she had to use a new Pokémon. She finally decided on Butterfree; she would save Nidoran for last if she made it that far, and Poliwag would just pit Water against Water Pokémon.

Horsea bounced around on its tail trying to hit Butterfree with its Bubble attacks, but Butterfree fluttered always out its reach. Blue's Pokedex began to go off, signaling that her fluttering bug was able to use a new move. As Blue read the new attack, she felt like she had a new power that couldn't be beat. This new attack she had seen before, and its effects were always potent, and sometimes humorous.
