Try, Try Again

*Katniss's POV*

The next morning, I feel great. I wake up with a big smile, and even though Peeta and I were at it pretty late last night, I don't feel tired. That was the first time we'd ever gone all the way. I looked over at Peeta, who was still asleep, and I decided to get up and attempt at making breakfast.

I was never good at making breakfast, or at making any food, really. So I pull out a recipe card for blueberry pancakes, and try to follow the instructions as closely as possible. The mix still turns out too runny and clumpy, and I sigh in frustration. As I hear a slight laugh around the corner, I turn to see Peeta leaning against the wall.

"How long have you been standing here?" I demand.

"The whole time. I woke up when you got out of bed," he replies.

"Thanks for helping me," I say sourly.

"Give it here," he says calmly, and adds the perfect amount of flour and baking powder to fix the mix. He adds the blueberries and pours it into circles on a hot pan. "I love you, even if you need help in the kitchen every now and then."

"More like every day," I say, but give him a nice big kiss.

We sit down to eat breakfast and Peeta says, "Do you think it worked?"

"I don't know, but I know how to find out," I say with a smirk.

We head to the doctor's office after breakfast, hand-in-hand. We go in and ask for the next appointment. When we get in, we find out that our doctor is none other than Delly Cartwright.

"Hey guys! How are you? How can I help y'all out today?" she says.

"Hello Delly, Peeta and I would like to know if we can be expecting a child."

Delly asked us some questions, then gave me a test to take. She said I just have to pee on this little stick, and it will tell me yes or no. I go in the bathroom, use the toilet, and look at the test. "NO" is what it says.

I go out to Peeta, who was dismissed to the waiting room after I went to the bathroom. He has a really hopeful look on his face. I walk over to him calmly.

"Peeta, it didn't work. I'm so sorry."

"Katniss, it's okay. It's only the first time. We'll keep trying. We will."

A few nights later, we try again. Nothing. And again a week or two later. Nope.

"Peeta, maybe we should stop trying."

"No! I mean, we can't. Not now. You're body is just figuring itself out. It will work, sooner or later."

We try for what we decided to be the last time for a little while. We decide to wait a little bit before we go see a doctor for a test.

I wake up a few mornings later, and I feel a sharp tug in my stomach. I turn over, but then I feel a similar tug in my throat. I run to the bathroom just in time to throw up into the toilet. After a few mornings of this, we go back to the doctor. For the first time in forever, the test tells me "YES".
