*Katniss's POV*
So we'd been in the hospital a few days now, and after a while, the doctor discharged us. I was still not allowed to walk apparently, so they wheeled me out to our car in a wheelchair. Peeta took Elizabeth and put her in the back seat, and then helped the doctors help me into the car.
We drove home, talking about if we wanted to always call her Elizabeth or if we wanted to call her by a nickname. We decided we'd call her Lizzie, and then Liz when she got older, but we'd have to teach her what her real name is first.
When we got home, I headed straight up to bed, because I was so tired. I was going to call all my friends to make sure they got home okay, but I didn't feel the need to, and I was really tired, so I just slept until Lizzie woke me up.
I fell asleep at about 11:00 AM and got woken up at about 3:00 PM, and of course any doctor will tell you that you need to feed your baby every hour, but Lizzie was asleep, and in my rule book, you UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES wake up a sleeping newborn.
So I sat down in this big comfy chair we bought before Lizzie was born, and I fed her while Peeta was in the kitchen doing something.
After a while, he came in and sat with us, and I took the opportunity to ask him what he was doing.
"I was just making a special breakfast for tomorrow that requires some prep work." He said.
So I believed him, and we talked about who's going to wake up when Lizzie does, and we agreed that we would both wake up, he would walk into her room and get her, change her diaper if necessary, and then give her to me to feed. It seemed like a fair deal, given that I didn't want to get out of bed at night, and Peeta was not capable of feeding her.
After a while, Lizzie fell asleep, and then Peeta went off to make dinner, a simple chicken and vegetables dish with a light gravy. It was, needless to say, delicious.
After dinner, we were sitting in the living room, and the phone rang. I looked at Peeta, asking him with my eyes if he would please go answer the phone. Being the wonderful husband that he is, he got up and answered the phone.
"Hello?" He said, "Oh wait a minute, she's right here." He turned to me, "It's for you."
So I got up and walked slowly to the phone, and Peeta handed me the receiver, "Hello?" I asked.
"Hello, is this Mrs. Mellark?" The man on the phone said, I sort of giggled because I loved being called Mrs. Mellark, but it still took me at a surprise when I get called it.
"Yes, this is her." I said.
"Mrs. Mellark," he said slowly, "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid the train your mother was taking back to the Capitol slid off the tracks while over a bridge, and the crash was fatal. There are no survivors."
Everything inside of me collapsed. I felt like..... nothing. I couldn't think, I couldn't talk, I couldn't walk, so I just slammed the receiver down and looked at Peeta. My face must have been worse than I expected because Peeta ran over to me and took my hand immediately.
"Katniss, what's wrong?"
I honestly couldn't form a coherent thought except for, "My mom........... she's dead."
