My heart was racing so fast, that I could barely breathe. There he was. After all the heartache, he was standing in front of me, looking like from Klaus to me.
I wanted to run into his arms and tell him how much I missed him, but Klaus's presence behind me reminded me why I was so upset with Alexey. He left me to get his ex-girlfriend. Without a word, I felt my face turn into a stone and my eyes starting to fog up. No! I refuse to cry anymore. This is not me - I spend my time running on a treadmill at the gym and dreaming about french fries, not crying over boys.
"Hello, Mr.Bogdanovych." I said to him as calmly as possible without starting to cry in front of the two guys around me.
"Adèle, I..." He seemed at a loss for words and his eyes nervously fidgeted to Klaus. Without thinking, I turned to him to see his facial expression. I was never a girl, who had guys fighting over her or even liked her, so I didn't know how it looked before a brawl, but I could definitely tell that, if they didn't put some distance between them, this hateful eye-staring contest could turn into a fight.
"Khem, Klaus." I cleared my troath, "I'll see you next break, okay?" He teared his hate-filled gaze from Alexey and his facial expression softened. Man, he really was a handsome guy.
Without saying anything, he pulled me into a hug. It wasn't the first time we'd hugged, but this time it felt different. Yes, maybe because Alexey was probably trying to roast Klaus with his stare, but something in Klaus's body language made me feel a little bit different.
After rubbing my back for a few seconds, he leaned closer to my cheek and for a second I froze, because I thought he was going to go the extra mile to make Alexey jealous and kiss me, but, thankfully, he didn't. Instead, he whispered "If you want me to kick his ass, just text me and I'll come flying" in my ear.
Ha! I wouldn't like to see that. Klaus's heroic behaviour was making me feel like I had suddenly fallen into some romance movie. "I'll keep that in mind." Pulling away from him, I winked playfully (hopefully he didn't think I was flirting).
This was it. With a deep breath, I turned to Alexey. He was still trying to burn Klaus with his gaze, so I decided to ignore him again. I marched right past him through the 'teachers-only' door and with a light jog, I was right in front of his cabinet in no time. Since he hadn't caught up to me, I was able to spot Alexis and Marzia in the crowd and join them.
When they noticed me coming, Alexis beamed. "There you are. Marzia was just telling me how she went out on a date with Jesse." Clearly trying to make up with Marzia, she smiled at her and it actually worked. She even opened up and told us all about the date, when we showed just enough interest.
Of course, I didn't hear half of it, just because I was so busy staring at the stairway, from which Alexey should come. But, weirdly, he didn't come. The bell rang and he still didn't come.
Where the hell was he? I hoped that he wasn't out, fighting with Klaus.
While waiting, Marzia used the fact that Alexis and I were quite interested in her life today and literally didn't shut up. We had to help her choose a perfect instagram picture and it's filter and help her write two witty text messages to Jesse, who was standing literally across the hall, smiling at his phone like crazy. He must really like Marzia. Good for them. At least someone was heading in the right direction in their relationship.
The girls started chirping and sounding all flirty, which meant he was coming up. The moment he appeared on the top of the stairway, his eyes searched the small crowd in the hallway until they found mine and he stopped. For a good half-a-minute, he just stood there, staring at me. He didn't have a bloody nose or a black eye, which made me think that Klaus was (hopefully) untouched, too. The only thing that was changed, was his hair, because it looked like he'd run his hand through his hair multiple times in despair.
"Hello, class. In you go." After breaking our gaze, he unlocked the door. I expected him to go inside first, but he just stood there, looking into my eyes once more. Crap, he's probably waiting for me to go past him, so he could pull me away and talk in private. Well, heck no, I won't be his puppet anymore. Even if he claims Irma and he didn't fuck that night, I don't want to hear about it. I just can't care anymore. If only I could erase these past 3 and a half months and return to the place I was before - happily in gym or at home, reading. No boys, no drama, no heartache.
Though I expected him to address me somehow, I was proven wrong. When we walked past him, I didn't dare to look at him, and he just let me by. No "Adèle, can we speak? or Adèle, a word?" Nothing.
Hmm.
Quietly sitting down in my usual spot, I didn't know what to expect. What if he tries to embarrass me in front of the whole class? No, he wouldn't. He is not this mean person I'm making up in my mind. He's just a guy, who decided to get his ex, rather than underaged teenager, who is...who was too head-over-heels for him. Not anymore. Hopefully.
"I hope you're ready to write about Bronte sisters. You had the whole weekend to study." Sounding like his mind was wandering somewhere completely elsewhere, he said. "Now, could anyone help me hand out these sheets? Adèle, perhaps?"
I felt the air leave my body. Why me? Stiffly, I got up and closed the little space to his table. He wasn't looking at me, he was looking at some paper on his table, which made me thankful, that his attention was on the paper. There is no way anyone wouldn't have suspicions about our relationship, if they saw the way we looked at each other.
His hand stretched out and he held a pile of papers to me. When I took them, our fingers touched and it felt like electricity had zapped me. My eyes almost went to his face, but I held myself together and turned to Alexis, but I could sense that Alexey's body had stiffened and was trying very hard to avoid my gaze, too.
Quickly passing out the papers, I tried to look as normal as I could, even though every cell in my body was celebrating the accidental touch we'd shared. Yes, I missed him and I wanted this to work out, but, even if I tried, could it? Could we ever be together while he's the teacher and I'm a student? I don't think so. There is absolutely no way it would end well, so there was no need to even try and act like this could work out. It just couldn't. Period.
Chanting this mantra quietly in my head, I almost tripped by Patricia's annoyingly pink bag. "Watch where you're going, wimp." She snapped, rolling her eyes like I'd just offered her to take a credit on the street.
"Bitch." I murmured quietly and returned to my seat, eyeing the test. It seemed easy enough and I finished it in record time. That was not a good thing, as now I had nothing else to do than just stare around the classroom. As my eyes accidentally found Alexey's face, our eyes met once again. His handsome face and depthless eyes always made think how perfect a human can be. There was literally nobody else I could ever compare to Alexey. Not even movie stars, and those are the prettiest people I could think of. But no, he beat every single one of them.
For a long time he didn't let the hold of my gaze go, so I just sat there, feeling more in love with each second and quickly forgetting that he'd broken my heart just few days ago.
The bell finally rang. I had sat in the same pose for at least 15 minutes, so my muscles were stiff and I needed a good stretch. Besides, that gave me time to compose my thoughts. I was going to stay here and finally talk. I couldn't keep this in anymore. I needed to talk to Alexey and hear him out. I needed to make up with him. I needed to say how much I missed him and how he made me crazy with the way his hair was beautifully sticking out everywhere and his blue eyes hypnotising me.
I needed all this, because I also needed to 'break up' with him.
