Why Hate the 2004 Movie?

The subject of the 2004 movie seems to be something the fandom is very divided on. There are those that like it, and those who don't. I understand and respect the fact that there are some people who don't like it, but I don't get the point of hating on it.

There's quite a bit of hate that's been aimed directly at Gerard Butler's portrayal of the Phantom. Now, is he my favorite Phantom? No, he isn't, but I don't dislike him. He isn't quite how I would have pictured the Phantom. I think they sexualized the character a little more than was necessary, and seemed to make the relationship between him and Christine a little more sexual than was necessary. I also think the could made the makeup a little more scary. But none of that is Gerard Butler's fault. I think it's the fault of whoever was in charge of the movie. So yes, I do like Gerard as the Phantom. He just isn't one of my favorites.

One thing that should be remembered is that this is a Hollywood film, NOT a Broadway production. You can't expect the movie to be an exact replica of the musical. The actors in it might sound a little weak compared to the stage actors, but that's because the actors in movie are Hollywood actors, not Broadway-trained performers.

The movie has its flaws, yes, but not every film can be flawless. I think what's really important is that the actors did their best, and the movie was likeable. It isn't the best musical movie I've ever seen, but it's good.

All in all, it's okay to be a fan of the movie, and it's okay to not be a fan of the movie. You have the right to your own opinion on the subject. If you didn't like the movie the first time you watched, try it again. If you still don't like it, then there's nothing I can do about that. And if you are a big fan of the movie but don't know many Phantoms, Christines or Raouls from the stage production, try looking them up and give them a shot, because you might find someone you'll really like.
