Something About LND

This was something that came to mind while listening to songs from Love Never Dies. I think I touched on this in my chapter on Love Never Dies, but I wanted to talk about it a little more.

So, according to the play Christine never really loved Raoul but loved the Phantom the whole time, despite him being the man who manipulated her, kidnapped her, and tried to force her to marry him. The fact that she actually went back to him and had sex with him after all of that is actually disturbing when you really think about it, and she actually would have ditched poor Raoul for him.

But the point I'm trying to get to is that the son Christine gave birth to, Gustave, was the Phantom's child, not Raoul's. They seem to go to great lengths in the play to make it seem like Gustave MUST be the Phantom's child. He sings and plays the piano, and he was into all the Phantom's creepy stuff. He can't be Raoul's kid, because Raoul is just some boring rich guy, right?

That's the thing with this play. It's actually a bad logic to go with. The night Christine and the Phantom hooked up was the night before Christine's wedding day, so chances are she and Raoul would have consummated the marriage the very same night. They must have, because Raoul believed he was Gustave's father.

Christine acts like she knows without any doubt whatsoever who Gustave's real father is. But the truth of that situation is that if she had sex with both the Phantom and Raoul in that short a time, there was no way she could have known for certain who was her son's biological father.

After watching almost six years' worth of General Hospital, I know that you need a DNA test for that kind of situation. But in the time period this takes place in, there was no DNA testing, so there's no way we could find out for certain who Gustave's real father is. It is possible there could have been something Raoul that he wouldn't have been able to have children, but I don't know if there were any kind of tests for that available at the time, either.

But to look at it another way, I guess since DNA testing wasn't an option, they had to make Gustave have the Phantom's musical talent to make them father and son.

Still, can you imagine if they found out the kid was actually Raoul's the whole time? It would almost be comical if, after everything that happened in LND, they found Raoul was the father the whole time. Well, it might actually have been comical if they hadn't killed off Christine.

Well, anyway, that's the end of that. I'm sorry if I got a little too scientific with this chapter, but it was just something I'd been thinking about. Feel free to comment your own thoughts on the subject, and if you think of another LND topic I could write about.
