In my time spent on Youtube, I've listened to so many Christines actresses I've come to enjoy listening to. It's sad that there many actresses who seem to largely go unnoticed these days.
For this chapter, I want to talk about some actresses I like that I think deserve a little more love.
Dale Kristien
Dale Kristien is one of the greatest Christines I've ever heard. She performed in the Los Angeles production from 1989-1993, and I think she might have performed on Broadway at some point before that. I've heard she's the only Christine actress who performed all eight shows a week, and she seemed to rarely missed a show.
I don't know how old Dale was when she played Christine, but she looked a little older then most others I've seen. But I don't think it really mattered, because she gave Christine a beautiful voice and a sweet, girlish charm, and she was clearly chosen for her obvious talent.
I once watched a comparison video of many Christines singing 'Twisted Every Way', and of all the ones I saw, I think Dale's was the best. She showed Christine's fear without being too dramatic about it.
On top of all that, she and Michael Crawford are one of the greatest Phantom/Christine duos I've ever heard. She also performed with Robert Guillame and Davis Gaines, but I think she sounded best with Michael:
Maria KesselmanMaria was an understudy for Christine during the show's early days in London. I think she only ever got to be an understudy, and I don't think she performed too often, which is a shame, because she was beautiful and had a beautiful voice. I've listened to her singing the title song with Michael Crawford many times, and the first time I heard it I was surprised by how great they sounded together:
Mary D'Arcy
I doubt many fans have ever heard Mary D'Arcy. I know she performed at some point during the Los Angeles production, and I think it was around the same as Dale Kristien, who performed all eight shows a week and rarely missed one. Because of that, I doubt Mary had many chances to perform. However, her singing and acting were both great, and I think she deserves recognition for that.
This is her 'Think Of Me':
Joke de Kruijf
Joke was the original Christine of the Dutch production, and I think she also performed as Christine in Germany and Austria. However, I can't feeling like she's kind of underrated.
Joke is one of favorite Christines ever. She has a very sweet voice that I think gave her Christine a more innocent and naïve charm.
This is her 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again':
Elena BahtiyarovaElena is my favorite Russian Christine, and I feel like she's underrated. Everyone always seems to be talking about Mercedsz Csampai and Tamara Kotova, and I like them, but I love Elena the most. She's a beautiful woman, and she makes a beautiful and elegant Christine.
This is her 'Think Of Me':
Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head, but there are plenty of others. If this goes over well, maybe I'll do a Part 2.
Feel free to comment if you know any other Christines you feel are underrated. And do try listening to a few Christines you've never listened to before, because there's always a chance you'll find a new favorite.
