Playing Double

Though you might already know this, there are a lot of actors who have played Raoul who have also gone on to play the Phantom. Today, I want to tell you about a few of them, and whether I like the actor's Phantom or Raoul better. There might be others I'm forgetting, but these are the ones I know of.

Steve Barton: Steve was the Raoul of the Original London and Broadway Casts. After playing the role for a few years, he played the Phantom on Broadway in 1990.

Raoul or Phantom? Well, I think I've made it pretty clear by now that Steve is my favorite Raoul. I just didn't like him as the Phantom.

Hugh Panaro: Hugh is very well-known and well-liked Broadway Phantom. He also played Raoul on Broadway in the early 1990s, alongside Mark Jacoby's Phantom and Karen Culliver's Christine.

Raoul or Phantom? I have to go with Phantom on this one. I'm sure Hugh was a good Raoul, but he's one of my favorite Phantoms, and I think he portrayed the character really well.

Ramin Karimloo: Probably one of the most famous Phantoms ever, but Ramin also played Raoul in London a few years before he began playing the Phantom.

Raoul or Phantom? I'm gonna have to go with Raoul. I've never been too fond of Ramin as the Phantom, but I really liked hearing him as Raoul, and he has become one of my favorites in the role.

Alfred Pfeiffer: Alfred played Raoul in the Original Austrian Cast in 1989. Sometime afterwards, he went on to play the Phantom in the same production.

Raoul or Phantom? I think I would say Phantom. He wasn't a bad-sounding Raoul, but I think I liked a little more as the Phantom.

Zoltan Miller: Zoltan was the Raoul of the Original Hungarian Cast. But he also became one of the Phantoms of the production.

Raoul or Phantom? You know, I'm not sure. I haven't listened to much from either role by him, but he sounded really good in both roles.

Tomas Ambt Kofod: I think this still counts, because Tomas played Raoul in the Danish production POTO in the late 2000s, and then played the Phantom in the Danish production of Love Never Dies in 2012/2013.

Raoul or Phantom? I think I would say Phantom. I liked the way he sounded as the Phantom better than his Raoul.

Those six are the only ones I can think of, so if there are any others, I don't think I've ever heard them before. If you know any others, let me know, and I'll be sure to listen to them.
