Chapter Four: The Outside World

I can't believe how dumb that fool is. That he would just leave without telling anyone.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhh!"
"Lee calm down, right now."
"No Michelle he left, and.. and I don't know what to do. We're not even strong enough to protect our friends anymore."
"Lee, let's all calm down and have some breakfast. We will look for him."
"How can you guys look for him if you can't go out there. You'll get sick like Dom."
"No Daniel, we can go out there and still be okay."
"How can we Lee, please inform us. Are you hiding something?"
"My dad has three gas masks in his closet, he wanted to be prepared for anything."
"Okay, so two of us go out to look for Dom. Simple."
So, we made a plan. Two people were going to leave and get more supplies and look for Dom. We made a list of everything we needed we didn't want to waste this opportunity:
1.Get more Arrows/Ammunition
2.Find a canned food or anything that hasn't spoiled
3.Get more bottled waters
4.Get medicine
5.Find some bikes
6.Find Dominic

"Alright, this is our plan. But who is leaving with me?"
It was silent for a while, it seemed like no one wanted to leave and help Dominic.
Then, Michelle stood up and said "I'll go with you. You'll kill yourself alone."
"Thanks. That means Daniel, Eli, and Grace is staying here. Hold down the fort please."
They all said in unison, "you got it, Lee. Pease, bring back Dom."
"I will and everyone is going to be okay."
We all hugged each other and they wished me and Michelle the best of luck.
"See you guys. Please...don't die." Grace said this with tears in her eyes.
Michelle said, "we want and we'll be back before you know it, bye guys."
So, the next thing to do was open the door. We had our mask on and we're all bundled up, but we stood there for a few minutes before opening the door and walking out into the green mist. Time was up and we needed to get supplies and find Dominic. So we walked out and saw our new world. The best way I can describe it is it was violently bare. The world seemed so empty and so full of death. We closed the door and went on our way to our first stop, Acme. it had what I needed: Arrows for my bow, and Michelle, who now had Daniels air rifle, needed a new one because this one was old and jammed up a lot. So, all we have to do now is walk ten blocks through this wasteland full of death and misery to get what we need to survive. So, we started walking down the streets hiding and checking that the coast is clear. Then Michelle broke the silence with a whisper, "Lee, I don't think we should try and find Dom."
I replied in a kind of shout whisper, "what are you talking about? He is our friend! We need to get him."
"No, we don't we were going to kick him out no matter what. He just left earlier than expected. Nothing has changed."
"We can save him. We're going to get more medicine and we are going to save him."
"Lee, do you honestly think it's going to be that easy."
A soulless ran passed our position it was the man who slammed into our window. We needed to hide, so we ran into a boutique. We could hear it walking around. With each step, it took we hoped it didn't come any closer. Picking the conversation up where we left off, "no, I know it will be difficult but we have to try."
"No we have to save our friends who aren't infected and the only way to do that is to make sure they don't starve and die."
Me, done with this conversation said, "just look out and see if it is still there. I don't want to talk about this anymore."
"Alright, but you need to stop acting like you're three. You're the oldest one in the group, act like it. And, for your information, the coast is now clear," said Michelle.
"How far are we from Acme," I asked.
"Still like seven blocks it's going to be a long trip."
"Honestly, this sucks can't we just make a run for it," I whined.
"Are you insane, do you have a death wish! They will hear us and kill us!"
"No, I just want this to be over with. Now, I know your mission was to leave Dominic to die."
"He is already going to die come on let's go you, little baby," she teased.
I didn't respond to that I just stayed quiet and Michelle didn't try to talk anymore. There was a silence between us and the whole world. As we walked past all these buildings, I look for some sign of normal life but I see nothing. I, at least I think, I saw other people who were alive. I thought I would see my parents. I needed them. I couldn't do this, it was too much. I needed someone else to take charge. I just couldn't make these decisions. I should've made Michelle the leader, she has the cold, ruthless attitude right now. I don't remember her ever acting like that before. Maybe it's just a mask to hide a scared thirteen-year-old girl. Before I could call her out on being fake she informed me, "Hey Lee, we're here. Get your head out of the clouds."
I look up at the sign and, believe it or not, we made it. So, we walked inside. We have two backpacks: one for water, and one for food. We start loading up and this trip seems pretty easy. I find fifteen more arrows and Michelle found a new air rifle.
"Wow, this is so easy. Maybe we can run back. We only saw one soulless so far. Maybe they all left," I chuckled at the end of my sentence. Finally, something was easy.
"No, don't be dumb, Lee. We need to be more alert than ever. Come on, let's leave."
When she finished saying that I see a soulless and point it out to her.
"No, Lee comes on. Let's leave."
I shake my head no and draw my bow. One shot is all it would take. One shot straight to the head, quick and easy. I pulled back my arrow and released it.
"Lee the death siren you idiot!"
Oh my god, I forgot about that. I saw my arrow make contact with the soulless and felt all feeling leave my body. The female soulless, who was in her early twenties I assumed, let out the loud, blood-curdling scream.
"Bwahhhhhhhhh"
Just like that, I heard soulless coming to our position.
"Lee, back to back were going to have to fight them off."
"Alright, Michelle I'm sorry if we die I just want you to know...."
"Lee, no time for that come on. Get your head in the game. They're coming."
She was right the sounds of the footsteps were straight on top of us now. I drew my bow and Michelle cocks her air rifle. We were either going to fight or die.
