My eyes peel open as my body wakes itself. The digital clock shows that it's only six in the morning where we are. I turn my head to look at the front of the bus. Sawney and Bean are sleeping in their seats. Across from me, Hanji snores and is strewn across the seat. They remind me of one of those toys that collapse and appear to be broken when the button is pushed in. Mike is curled up like a dog, mainly due to Hanji invading his space.
Something moves on my thigh and I look down at the male. His once pale and sickly skin is now filled with color, although it's probably not his original skin color yet. He shifts again and his body strains to wake itself up. His eyes close tighter before opening. His brilliant animalistic green eyes look up into my cold gray ones for a few seconds before he bolts up. The IV swinging with his sudden movement.
He grunts as his hands fly to the wound, awaking the others. Hanji flies off the seat, hitting their head upon landing. Mike just looks over at us before stretching. Sawney and Bean look back at us and yawn.“Wh-what?” The male starts, looking around at the bus, it's passengers and then the stitching over the wound.
“Would ya settle down?” Hanji scowls, rubbing their head. They get up and move to the male, who tries to increase the shrinking distance. They lightly remove his hands from the wound and check over it.
“Somehow you managed to not rip any of your stitches,” Hanji pushes up their glasses and stands up into a stretch.
“Huh?” The male asks, once again looking around.
“You were shot.” Hanji rubs their temples and Mike stands up. The male shrinks back even more. I honestly didn't think it was possible but he did it. I understand why, Mike is extremely tall and looks threatening. I'm the real threat though.
“I know that,” He retorts, “why would you sew me up?” Hanji looks to me, expecting me to answer while they get their bag again.
“We had a doctor handy,” I calmly state. “And it would be shitty of us to leave you.” Mike laughs a little.
The male looks away, pink specks injecting themselves into his cheeks. Hanji returns and tosses me some wound cleaner that they concocted, a pair of latex gloves, and a clean cloth. I slip on the gloves and pour some of the solution on the cloth before moving to the floor in front of him.
“It's gonna hurt,” I warn as I start to clean the wound. He takes a sharp breath in but doesn't move away from me. After I finish, Hanji hands me some gauze to wrap around the wound. He moves forward so I can make it all the way around his torso with the roll.
“Thank you,” he says, “and thank you for not taking me to a hospital.”
“Oh, by the way,” Hanji looks to him, “why-”
“It was no problem,” I interrupt, just finishing the wrap. Hanji cuts me some medical tape that I fasten the end with. I move back to the seat again.
Mike starts up the electric stove and begins to cook some omelets. He starts with Sawney’s and looks to the male.
“What do you like on your omelet?” He cuts some small pieces of steak off and places them in the raw eggs.
“Do you have any Sriracha?” Mike nods. “Sriracha, steak, and cheese please, uh,” He stops, realizing that he still knew nothing about us. Or where he was.
“Mike Zacharias,” I point to Mike who nods, “Zoe Hanji, goes by Hanji,” I motion to them, walking to the back of the bus, “Sawney Kyojin and Bean Kyojin,” I nod to the front, “and I'm Levi Ackerman.”
“It's nice to meet you all. I'm Eren Jaeger,” He smiles.
“It's nice to meet you too Eren!” Hanji calls from behind the closed curtain.
“So where did you stop Sawney?” I ask, sensing that would be Eren’s next question.
“We made it about thirty miles out of the town before I stopped.”
“Needing to go back?” I turn to Eren. He now holds a key in his hand, attached to his neck with a thin chain.
“No,” sorrow fills his voice, but it's a definite answer.
“Any place you need to go?” He shakes his head no.
Hanji returns from the curtain looking more male with their hair in a ponytail, a baggy gamer shirt and basketball shorts. Eren stares for a moment, confusion laced in his face.
“Hanji doesn't admit to being one gender or the other,” I explain, “They like switching up everything from one day to another. Depending on how long you stay, you may get used to it.” His head shoots up to look at me.
“You're not kicking me out?” He asks, surprised.
“That is what I implied, brat.”
Hanji smirks and walks by me, stopping to coo a letter in my ear, “E.”
“Don't even think about it shitty glasses!” I yell at them as they run for the door. I'm tempted to chase them but don't.
“How do you all know each other?” Eren asks.
“Close friends from middle school,” Bean answers.
Eren nods as Mike walks to the front to give Sawney his breakfast, then back to work on Eren’s.
“Are they related?” He motions to the two in the front.
“Brothers,” Bean yells back to us. “I'm the oldest.”
“Although he acts like the youngest,” Hanji mumbles as they return to the bus. “How old are you Eren?”
“I’m twenty almost twenty one.”
“Any family you'd like to call?” He shakes his head, a horrified expression barely visible behind his brown hair. I shoot Hanji a scowl making them back off. Whatever happened, happened recently and it wasn't pleasant.
Mike hands me Eren’s plate and continues to make breakfast. I stand up, walk over to Eren, and mess up his hair. He looks up at me with tears collecting in his eyes. I hand him the plate and walk to the cupboard, retrieving two cups.
“What do you want to drink?” I ask, opening the insulated cooler we've kept our drinks in. “We've got milk, O. J., coffee, and tea.”
“Orange juice please,” he quietly says.
I poor him and myself a glass, then sit back down next to him.“Thank you Levi.” Eren forces a smile, but his eyes are still dim with sadness.
I nod and sip my cup, testing the taste before I do so. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see Eren’s eyes light up a bit as he stifles a laugh. I choke a little and begin coughing. Hanji laughs at the entertaining scene before explaining to Eren my weird drinking habit.“He does that to protect his vocal cords,” they smile. Eren nods but still looks confused. “They didn't tell you?”
“We didn't know if we should Hanji,” I wheeze.
“We're a band,” Hanji blurts.
