Mike had just finished his omelette and hands me his plate as he leaves to change. I begin the dishes and cleaning up the stove. Eren watches me closely. I get everything put away and sanitized before carefully moving Eren to a different seat. I wipe down where he was sewn up, going over it a third time just to be sure. After all, he had been in trash and if anyone gets sick I'll never forgive myself.
It dries as I get Eren and get him back on the seat. I wipe down the other seat as well since Hanji tends to drool in their sleep. Eren looks around at the bus.
“So are you some sorta germaphobe?”
I stop cleaning and turn to him. He shrinks back a little and adverts his eyes.
“He prefers the term ‘Clean Freak’,” Mike corrects, making Eren jump.
“Sorry,” He apologizes, looking to me.
“He isn't afraid of germs,” Hanji elaborates, folding the map they were hiding behind, “he just has OCD about dirt, dust, and grime. It's due to-”
“Something in my past,” I interrupt, “and that's where I would like it to stay.” I scowl at them.
“Alright, alright,” Hanji puts up their arms to surrender, “if he was a germaphobe you would probably be dead right now.”
Eren turns a little pale. “What do you mean?”
“You needed a blood transfusion, Levi provided it.” Eren looks at me again, his eyes expressing an emotion that I hadn't seen before.
“You really did that for me?”
“It's not like I wouldn't do it for anyone else,” I say, looking away from those green eyes.
“Thank you, I don't know how I'll ever rep-”
“Shut up, brat. We don't need to be paid back.” I snap.
He nods and stays silent for a moment.
“How did you know my blood type?”
“Huh?” Hanji tilts their head.
“Wouldn't you need to know that for the blood trans-thingy?”
“Transfusion,” Hanji corrects “and not necessarily, Levi is a universal donor.”
Eren looks at me with astonished eyes, like I'm some mythical being.
“Tch.” I snap my head to the window. Out of the corner of my eye I can see him blush and look away.
“I'm sorry,” He apologizes.
“Don't apologize brat.”
“Oh, okay.” He keeps his eyes away from me.
“Sawney, our next stop is going to be a hotel stop.” I say to the front.
“Sure thing boss,” he nods and starts up the bus.
I place my cleaning supplies in their proper places before sitting next to Eren again.
“Everyone seated?” Bean asks.
“Yep let's go!” Hanji exclaims.
“Eren,” I say, causing him to look at me again, “when we get into a town, we’ll stop for some snacks for you, to tie you over till we eat again.”
“Why are you doing all this for me?”
I honestly have no response for him. It's just a thing I've decided to do, a thing that I feel the need to do. I saved him from death and it's only right to let him stay and provide for him, right? I feel betrayed by my own gift, it provides me lyrics to continue a living, yet now when I need it most, it fails to properly convey what I mean.
“I just am.”
I want to smack myself, but I don't. Hanji looks to me with disappointment laced in their eyes. I guess they wanted an answer as well. I'm not sorry to disappoint you.
“Come on Levi,” They whine. I shake my head. “To think we rely on you for lyrics.” They tease.
“Four Eyes,” I growl.
“Short Shit,” Hanji sang horribly, causing me to throw a pillow at them, hitting them dead in the face.
Eren chuckles at the spat. The bus suddenly shakes as Sawney gets back onto the road, making Eren slide into me. He looks up to me with those eyes again. The overwhelming feeling of familiarity washes over me. I know I've seen those eyes before. Eren blushes before returning to his side. He looks at the floor, thoughts clouding his mind.
I think he knows it to, that we've met before. Not like seen each other on the street, or shared an elevator ride, but like we were close and hand held long conversations over food.
The bus turns a sharp corner, bringing my thoughts back to the real world. I look out the window at the passing cars and signs. Our bus, much like us, has no recognizable markings on it to provide insight on what or who it contains. The outside world blurs by, reminding me how much we've traveled and how little we've actually seen.
I look to Eren, who looks to the back of the bus. The idea that what he once knew was behind him comes to mind as I stare at him. I can see the chain glint in the morning light as he fidgets with the key.
I assume someone back there gave it to him, and from the look he gave it earlier, it was someone who he wouldn't see for a long time. Someone who meant something to him, his parents maybe.
Eren turns back to me, tears collecting in his eyes. He smiles as if to say he's alright. I can tell he's not, but I know better then to ask. The bus stops and he slides to me again. This time he doesn't move away, instead he leans forward so his hair covers his face. Tears fall from his hidden eyes and land on my jeans. I slowly move my hand through his hair and to his cheek, wiping the streams of his tears with my thumb. He falls to my chest and silently cries, my arms instinctively wrapping around him.
Hanji and Mike look to me and I shake my head. It's not the time or place to explain. Eren needs to cry and he needs to be able to do it without someone asking questions. Those will come later, when I'm sure that he can handle them.
