It's April 15th, 1986. You and Michael have been dating for almost 1½ year.
"Mette?? Wake up sweetie!" I hear a soft voice saying. I slowly open my eyes, a bit confused. Michael usually never wakes up before me. I get my eyes up, and the first thing I see is my beautiful boyfriend standing over me, a big smile on his face.
"Happy birthday!" He declares.
I suddenly sit up in the bed. It's my birthday!
"Thank you!" I reply, smiling widely. I get up from the bed in my pajamas, which is actually just a pair of leggings and one of Michaels T-shirts.
I look up at Michael with an excited smile, which he returns. Then I take his hand, and we walk out of the door to the living room together. I stop for a second when I look at the small dining table at the window. Michael have set it beautifully, with a vase with sunflowers in the middle and blue napkins with a print of small birds on them. And a small present, wrapped in red paper, at one of the plates. Mine, I guess.
"Wauw! Michael it's beautiful!" I happily tell him.
"Not as much as you!" He replies in his beautiful, soft voice, stroking a bit of my dark, almost black, hair back behind my ear.
"Thank you" I say, blushing a bit. I have known this man for six years of my life, how can he still make me blush with small things like this?? Because he's Michael, I assume. "But if that's the case, it must be lightyears behind you!" I continue with a glimpse in my eyes.
He gives me a shy smile, and gesticulates towards the table. We have a bigger table, of course, for when we have visitors. But he knows that I like to use the small, two-persons one when it's just me and him. We both sit down, and I look down at the present and back at him, asking if I can open it.
"Go ahead!" He says, and I starts carefully removing the paper. I get it off, and inside it I find... a box. A black box, and it's light. There's not something heavy in it, that's for sure. I look at Michael with curiosity in my eyes, and he looks back with an excited smile. I look down at the box again, and open it. And inside it is a card. I take it up, it's folded on the middle so I can't see what stands in it. I look at Michael again, confused this time. He just looks back at me with that same smile, clearly impatient for me to open the card. I do, and my first reaction when seeing what stands in it is confusion. It's an address.
"Michael... what is this address for? Where is it?" I ask confused.
"You'll see!" He just answers with his biggest smile lightening up the room. Despite my many questions he insists that we eat breakfast first. I can't help but enjoy it - he made waffles! My absolute favorite! When we're done eating, I run to the bedroom to change to some normal clothes, while he cleans the dishes. I would have helped him, but he insisted that I shouldn't do it on my birthday. When we're both ready, we goes to the car and Michael starts driving.
All through the drive I ask him questions:
"Where is it? What is it? Is it something big? Is it... is it an experience?"
He just laughs quietly and tells me to "wait and see".
He finally parks the car, and I get out in the hope of seeing something that could indicate what it is. But I see nothing but normal houses.
"Come on, it's in here!" He says, gesticulating to me to follow him to the door of an ordinary looking house. I do so, very confused. He rings the doorbell, and only seconds later a woman I don't recognize opens the door.
"Oh, Mr. Jackson! Come inside" She says with a welcoming smile. "Is that the birthday girl?" She asks politely when I enter the house.
"Yes, it is." Michael answers with a warm smile to me. I return the smile, unsure about what we're doing here. "Are they ready?" He continues, and the woman nods, smiling.
"They sure are. Come on in and see them"
She opens a door into a cozy looking living room, with paintings on the white walls and fire in the fireplace. I send Michael a questioning look before entering the room. He just looks at me with that same, big smile, before following me inside. The woman goes to a corner of the room where there is some sort of playpen.
"My name is Maria, by the way. Come over here and see" She says, and I walks over to her, not knowing what to expect. When I look down the playpen, I can almost feel my heart melting.
One, two, three, four... five! Five cute, fluffy puppies are sleeping in the playpen. I sit down on the floor, absolutely speechless.
"Michael, are you... Can I... Are we going to..." I stutter, not knowing how or what to say.
"Yes, I'm giving you one, yes you can have one, yes we are going to adopt one" He says, answering all my unfinished questions.
In that moment one of them stretches a bit and opens its eyes, and I can once again feel my heart melting. I look at Maria for permission, and she nods. I carefully picks it up, feeling the soft fur against my hands. The small dog immediately falls back asleep on my lap, and I simply can't take my eyes of it.
"Do you want that one?" Maria asks, probably able to guess my answer.
"Yes please!" I manage to get out. I feel Michael sitting down beside me, but I don't dare to move in fear of waking up the small creature sleeping in my lap. He reaches out a hand and pets it softly behind the ears, to which the dog responds with yawning and opening its eyes a bit.
"Then let's get it home" Michael says, and I take it in my arms and stand up, careful to not do it any harm.
Michael thanks Maria, but I barely sense it. We get out and into the car, and drive all the way home in silence. Me petting the little dog, in no way able to take my eyes of it's cute little nose and adorable small ears, Michael with a big smile and a glance at me every time he can take his eyes of the road for a second.
When we get home and into the house, I finally wakes up. I set the puppy carefully down at the floor, before embracing Michael in a long hug.
"Thank you so much!" I say when we finally let go.
"You're welcome. It's worth everything to see you this happy!" He replies, and I suddenly remember that it's not only dogs that can make my heart melt. Michael does it just as well.
"Do you have any ideas for a name?" He asks, and my cheeks turn red.
"Yes" I mumble. "You know I have always wanted a dog, and... well, I have planned for a long time what it should be called."
Michael gesticulates to me to continue, and I do as told:
"Charlotte Dorthea Rosé Jackson" I tell him. "And Lotte for short"
"Ambitious!" He says, raising one eyebrow. "I like it!" He then continues, a smile lighting up on his face.
"Good" I say, smiling as well. "It's Charlotte because... Well, I liked the name, and I wanted to call it Lotte for short. And then Dorthea because it's my grandmothers name, Rosé because I like the name Rose and have a friend who loves French, and then of course Jackson because of you"
"It's beautiful!" He says. I takes his hand, looking up at his eyes. "Just like you" He then continues. I blush lightly (again), before leaning in close to him. He wastes no time in pressing his sweet lips against mine, destroying the last space between us. One of his hands is supporting my neck, keeping me close to him, while the other is placed at my waist.
I run my fingers through his soft, black curls, just enjoying the moment and the feeling of him so close to me.
A deep sense of happiness fills me , and I just know it. I'm gonna spend the rest of my life with this man.
