A wish coming true

It's the year 1982. You and Michael have known each other since forever, and today marks two years since he first, blushing and shy, told you that he really liked you, and asked you out on your first date. It's September 30th, and there's three months till the planned release of his new album, Thriller. You work as a journalist, while Michael makes his music.

I sit in the living room with my computer, fixing the last details in my article about what the old scientist I interviewed called the "biggest scientific breakthrough in this century". In reality it's a new idea about how to provide water resources to the countries suffering from drought, and so far it's only an idea. Haven't been tested, haven't been published, haven't even been written down before now. But well, the man behind it is my boss' nephew, so I guess that's why we're taking it in the newspaper.

Right in the middle of checking my grammar, my thoughts begin to wander off, and all of sudden I'm back at yesterday evening.

*Flashback*

"Stop it!" I yell laughing, right when Michaels pillow that he just threw hits me in the face, and I sit down on the mattress to finish my laughing.

Me and Michael must be the two most childish adults in history! And why do I think that?? Because we right now are finishing pulling all of our blankets and pillows and mattresses out on the balcony. We thought that it could be nice to sit out there, all cozy with our blankets and pillows, and watch the sunset and the stars. But right now, it's just a pillow fight.

After half an hour of dragging out stuff and throwing pillows and scaring each other with blankets, pretending to be ghosts, playtime is over. The sun starts to go down, and we both sit down in our comfortable seats to enjoy the show. It's like all the laughing and wild energy from before has disappeared. We just sit there, as close as humanly possible, enjoying the beautiful view of the sinking sun. I look up at Michael with a little smile, enjoying the cozy and peaceful atmosphere that all of sudden came over us. I see the orange light hitting his face, reflecting from his soft, black curls. I see how his eyes are opened to the sun, how he looks at it in wonder and amazement. I see how his lips are curled in a small smile, showing the beauty and wonder he sees and feels about this amazing phenomena that we get to experience every single day, but way too rarely really sees and appreciates. And then I see his face turn to me, I see his eyes light up with happiness and his lips widen into that beautiful smile of his. I smile back, happy in the knowledge that I can just sit here with him, just enjoy the moment.

We sit like that for a long time, not saying a word, just admiring the lightshow on the sky. At some point, the sun is totally gone, and the stars begin to appear. After a little while, Michael lifts his hand and points.

"Look!" He says, breaking the silence. I follow his finger to see what he's looking at:

"A shooting star!" I exclaim.

"Yes. Make a wish!" Michael replies with excitement.

"Okay..." I close my eyes, focusing on the one thing I really want.

Little star, let me get married to Michael one day.

I open my eyes again, looking up at him.

"Did you wish too?" I ask, and he nods.

*Flashback ends*

The sound of steps rips me out of my thoughts, and I look up to see Michael getting into the room. I stand up from the table and goes to give him a hug.

"Hey baby! You're home early!" I say

"Yeah, I let the guys go home early. They deserve it, they have been working so hard lately!" He answers with a little smile.

"And so have you!" I respond to him. "Come on, I'll make us a cup of tea"

"Or... we could go for a walk?? Just here in the park?" Michael suggests. If I didn't know any better, I would think he was... nervous? But what would he have to be nervous about? I shove the thought away. It's probably nothing.

"Sure, sounds good" I reply with a smile, before standing on my tiptoes to give him a small kiss on the cheek. He smiles, and squeezes my hand. Then we go and take our shoes, and soon we're out of the door. It's still warm outside, and none of us wear a jacket.

We go one of our usual routes, behind the guest house, around the lake and then at a small, twisted path back to the house. Michael asks me about the article, and I tell him about the whole boss'-nephew-thing, and that I think it's a stupid story. He smiles compassionate, and I then proceeds to ask him about his day. This small-talk goes on for a little while, and I can just feel him getting more and more nervous. By now I'm sure it's not just me, it really is something. I'm actually starting to get a little scared. No matter what is wrong, it's making Michael nervous, and then it must be bad! He's very good at remaining calm, even when under pressure. I guess that's one of the things you learn in showbusiness...

Finally, when we're right behind the lake, the farthest from the house we come in this route, Michael stops. I stops too, partly because he's holding my hand. He just stands there in front of me, looking all scared and nervous. He takes a deep breath... I'm almost sure something is wrong. Someone have had an accident, someone has gotten sick... or the worst! It hurts just to think about it, think that it could be a possibility. But of course it's a possibility, even one of the more likely. He's gonna break up with me. He doesn't love me anymore.

All these thoughts race through my head in the about five seconds he just stands still in front of me. By now I'm almost certain that I'm right, that he's gonna make it over. And then... then he does something so radically different that my mind for a second can't comprehend it.

Everything gets quiet as I watch him go down on one knee. I can feel the blood pumping in my veins, can feel the light wind against my skin, feel the warmth from the sun. It's like all my senses are heightened. Everything stops when he takes out a little box, and opens it to reveal a beautiful ring. And then he speaks, in the sweetest and softest voice:

"Gry, I love you with all my heart, you're everything I want from this world. I have been in love with you since the moment I saw you for the first time, and... And Gry... Will you marry me?"

For a moment I am unable to speak. I just stand there, seeing the hope in his beautiful, deep, brown eyes. And then the moment is over and I immediately almost screams:

"Yes! Oh yes, Michael, there's nothing I want more!"

He gets up again, and carefully puts the ring on my finger. I don't take time to admire it, the moment he looks up and into my eyes, I put my arms around his neck and kisses him passionately on the lips. He returns the kiss, and I can feel him smiling against my mouth. I can't help but smile a little myself, and when we finally pull apart, there's tears in my eyes.

"Do you know what I wished for last night, Michael? When we saw the shooting star?" I ask.

"No?" He answers, telling me to continue.

"I wished that one day, I would get married to you" I tell him with a little smile.

"Really?" He says, sounding genuinely surprised.

"Yes! Why do you sound so surprised?" I ask him.

"Well..." He begins. "Because I wished the same. I wished that you would say yes to me."

"I knew it." I mumble. Then I add, a bit louder: "We are a wish coming true". He smiles, and carefully strokes some hair out of my face.

"We are a wish coming true" he repeats, and it just sounds so... beautiful, so perfect and so true, when it comes from his mouth, in his beautiful voice. He bends down to give me a short kiss on the lips, before taking my hand. We then starts walking back to the house together.
