Looks, from everywhere. Stares and not the kind type; its hatred mixed with disbelief and surprise.
All we are doing is holding hands. Addison notices but all she does is smiles at me and tells me not to worry. I don't worry because I can't change every single person's mind. Not everyone is going to be okay with us living amongst them, that would be crazy to think. I smile back at her--my most charming smile--and wink, she smiles wider and starts to swing our hands in between us. A girl and a zombie...
I am so glad that things have changed sufficiently that we are able to live this; that we are able to be out and about without hiding.
"So I was thinking about this weekend..." Addison begins, with that beautiful smile on her face.
"Are you thinking picnic out in the park? Because I'm thinking picnic out in the park."
"I'm thinking that sounds amazing, just you and me....all alone."
"Yep, you and me and a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches, the breeze of the trees... and your gorgeous face." I grin at her and she laughs.
"I think that's included in the you and me part?"
"Say that again?" I say, loving the way she says it.
"You and me. Zed and Addison. Us...together."
"Together." I agree.
She nuzzles herself against my arm as we walk, sighing deeply as they walk through Seabrook town.
...
I don't think I've ever felt at ease as I do now as I give Addison a hug goodbye on her front porch. I can see her father and mother peering through the blinds from here, so as much as I want to kiss her goodbye I know it isn't the time. She grins brightly at me, waving goodbye as I trek off back to Zombietown.
Life is just beautiful.
We've all basically been granted integration into town, well, an emphasis on basically. Apparently, we can apply to move into town, but so far no one is really taking the offer. As much as I would personally love to live closer to Addison I don't want to leave my home and my friends. I like it where I live, even if it's away from everyone else.
As I enter Zombie town I'm quickly aware of the group of guys sitting on a rusted car, I'm aware of them because they are being loud-much too loud. It's like the equivalent of being next to a passing train that has chains hanging from the back. But you know what? It's still early, curfew is much later, and we should all have a chance to have fun too.
My dad is standing stoically in the entrance of the front door, his arms crossed against his chest.
I nod at him, "What's up pops!"
He greets me with such a serious expression and ushers me inside.
"What do you know about Equal Z?" He asks me suddenly.
"Uh...Equal Z?" I repeat confused, kicking my sneakers off.
He continues to look at me, searching for something on my face.
"I have absolutely no idea what that is...like at all," I say, moving my head back as he gets nearer.
My father sighs in relief, patting my shoulder, "I'm glad to hear that from you, son."
He turns away and heads to the kitchen.
"Mind me asking why you asked me?"
He looks around, looking to see if Zoey was anywhere.
"I've been hearing some talk about these rebelling zombies and the name Equal Z. I don't know what kind of group that is or what they are rebelling against, but I wanted to make sure you had no part of that."
"Dad, me rebel?" I chuckle, "When have I ever done something that I shouldn't have?"
"Would you like me to make a list, son?" He says, glancing down at my Z-band.
I smile sheepishly and cover my band with my hand, "That wasn't a rebellion that was me trying to get a win for all of us."
"I know, and I know you would never be a part of anything that would hurt any of us. Well, intentionally at least."
I chuckle again, "I hurt no one but myself," I pause, "...and Bonzo, and Eliza...but it wasn't my fault and you know it."
"Yes I know, now go on and get yourself ready for dinner, I'm making some garlic roasted cauliflower, a new recipe I found"
"Yum." I grin, patting my stomach and running off up the stairs and straight into my room.
"ZED!" Zoey yells out in glee when she sees me, little Puppy trailing behind her.
"Hey kiddo, how was Puppy today?"
"Great! I taught him how to roll over, do you want to see?"
"Sure."
"All right. Puppy, sit." She points her finger at Puppy and he takes his time but he sits down, his tail wiggling across the floor.
"Okay, now roll over."
Puppy is still sitting there.
"Puppy, roll over." She says again and Puppy lifts both his paws up.
"Roll over!" She orders again, twirling her finger in the air. Puppy twirls in his place and sits back down.
"He did it just a minute ago, I swear!"
I'm grinning ear to ear, "I believe you."
She takes a deep breath, "Okay, come on Puppy we have to go practice that again." She begins to leave back to her room.
"Don't take too long dad's getting dinner ready," I call out to her.
"Okay." She says as she walks off.
I run off into my room and jump into bed for a few minutes. I think of Addison and her smile and before I know it I doze off.
