Something has clearly happened. Do I panic?
... A little bit. It's not every day that there is that many police officers outside of Zombietown. It's happened a few times when a Zombie was outside after curfew. And...it's been mostly me, mostly. Okay, no I'm not a big trouble maker here. I was nearly caught for that celebration of my incredible performance as a football player... I still feel bad about abandoning Addison like that. Another time, I simply took a step out of the door and there was about three officers outside pointing guns at me and yelling to go back inside.I did.
And one time, months ago, when I threw a football out of my window (it was an accident) and I went racing outside to grab it (a terrible idea in hindsight-- a zombie running outside like a maniac. ) It was no wonder I was quickly surrounded by five enormous guys that pinned me to the ground. I pretended I was tackled, which was not hard to believe since I was actually tackled, but I imagined it was because I was going for the end zone. TOUCHDOWN, I was screaming in my mind. It made the situation of having my reanimated life nearly crushed a little bit better. I was honestly really glad I wasn't crushed because I look really good right now and that would have made me look like a watermelon after it's been dropped from a roof. Can you imagine a watermelon walking after it's been dropped? Yeah, it's not a pretty sight. No offense to Eddie, a neighboring zombie, who had an unfortunate meeting a few years ago with a set of barbells.
"Do you really want to walk into that?" Eliza asked Addison while we were coming up to the guarded gate.
"If you expect me to walk away I am going to disappoint you," she answered.
Eliza huffed, "I'd be more disappointed if you did leave. I would have called you a chicken."
"You two, show your left wrists!" One of the guards demanded, indicating to me and Eliza with his hand. We both looked at each other for a moment before we raised our wrists. The officer nodded and motioned for us to continue.
One of the guards, tall and balding terribly, held a hand up at Addison to stop her.
"Miss Addison, Powell will escort you back home."
Powell, a younger man with blonde hair, stepped forward, holding his hand out to Addison.
Addison took one look at his hand and crossed her arms, "No he won't. I'm not going anywhere. Is my father inside, Eric?"
"What's going on here?" I asked amiably, but the two men were clearly not into having an amiable conversation right now.
"Zombie kids going missing at the exact same time two people have." Bald Eric said accusingly.
"That doesn't mean anything at all," Eliza grumbled before going through the gate.
Addison moved to join her but she was stopped by Powell.
"I'm sorry, Miss Addison, but we cannot allow you in there at this moment, your father—" Addison ducked under his arm and went on through.
"Miss Addison!" Powell turned around to call after her but he didn't move from his spot. They both turned to look at me, expecting me to do something. I simply shrugged with a big grin on my face as I went right past them. Addison was waiting for me just ahead and I caught up to her.
"You do know they are going to let your father know you are in here, right?" I tell her as we begin to walk, "He's only going to force you to go home."
She bit her lower lip and shrugged, "I will go home...just not now..." She trailed off, tilting her head at something far off. I squint my eyes and I see her, one of my neighbors pacing across her front lawn with her arms crossed across her chest, muttering to herself.
"Do you think she's okay?" Addison asked.
I shrugged, "Let's ask."
She's a friend of my dad's, Madeline Tranely, most of the time she is cheerful and full of joy. Sometimes she would come around our house to bring me and Zoey oatmeal cookies.
"Mrs. Tranely, are you okay? What's happening? "
